Challenges Facing 'Castle' Writers Due to Romance Role Reversal

The roles of hunter and hunted have reversed on "Castle" to where Detective Kate Beckett is now hunting for the love of Richard Castle. With the four-year ride we have been on as Rick tries to gain the heart of Kate, it is fitting how the roles have now changed. There are concerns, though, that fans should have about this reversal.

    The End?

The creators of the show have said for a long time that the final connection between Rick and Kate will mark the end of the show. If she finally wins back Rick's heart, will this truly be the end of the show? Part of the magic of the show is in the chase between the two main characters. Once that is gone, will many fans still be as interested in the show?

    Drawn Out?

With the creators knowing how the connection between the two characters will cause a decline in viewership (since a key aspect of the show will be gone), they might decide to draw out the chasing of Rick by Kate. The attempt could be made to drag the show on for the sake of extra episodes and could cause fans to lag off as they become bored with the changes in both Kate and Rick. When Rick was chasing Kate, it was rarely one of the major aspects of episodes. That should not change with the role reversal.

    Switching the Switch

The creators could also decide that Kate was going to chase Rick for a few episodes and then Rick would go back to chasing her for a few. This could switch back and forth, and make for an interesting series of circumstances for a short time. This would not be a long-term angle as it could get boring after a few switches.

Whatever happens with Kate chasing Rick, the creators need to keep the idea in mind that they should not use techniques to extend the show or draw it out. Fans will quickly realize if the writers have run out of ideas and are simply tossing out anything in the hopes that something will stick. This would be the best time for the writers to become as creative as possible.
