Charlie Rose and Gayle King will join CBS's The Early Show when the morning news program undergoes a major revamp next year, The New York Times reports.

The new two-hour format would go against the grain of competitors Good Morning America and Today and emphasize hard news while also utilizing a conversational approach a la ABC's The View.

Big changes for CBS' The Early Show

Rose, 69, and King, 56, will join two of The Early Show's current team members, Erica Hill and Jeff Glor, on a new set currently under construction. Rose would lead the 7 a.m. hour along with Hill, while King would spearhead the 8 a.m. hour, according to the newspaper.

The revised show may also get a new name, according to the Times.

This new direction for The Early Show is the program's second major shake-up in less than a year. Last November, Harry Smith, Julie Chen, Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price were reassigned from the morning shift.

Reports about Rose's hiring have been rampant for weeks. When asked whether his possible new gig would mean the end of his longtime self-titled PBS interview program, Rose told the Times, "not under any circumstances." It is unclear if King, known for her longtime friendship with Oprah Winfrey, would continue to do her radio-turned-TV talk show, The Gayle King Show, on Winfrey's cable network if she joins CBS.
