The veteran character actor has brought subtle shades of humanity to the character of Hershel Greene, the kindly farmer who provided shelter to a band of survivors — and a barn full of zombies, including his wife and stepson. The slaughter of those "walkers" raises the question of whether Hershel will cast out Rick, Shane & Co. when the AMC shocker returns from its midseason hiatus in February.

The role represents a 180-degree turn from Wilson's breakout role nearly 45 years ago as one of the murderers (along with Robert Blake) of a Midwestern farm family in the big-screen adaptation of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. More recently, he's recurred as Marg Helgenberger's crooked casino-owner dad on CSI. Wilson's future on The Walking Dead may be uncertain, but his career and his talent are alive and well.
