Clint Eastwood on Super Bowl Ad: I'm Not Obama's Puppet!

Clint Eastwood is setting the record straight about his improbably controversial Chrysler ad that aired on Sunday's Super Bowl.

The "Gran Torino" director went on the defensive Monday, dismissing suggestions that the ad is a partisan love letter to President Obama.

Speaking to Ron Mitchell, a producer at Fox news Channel's "The O"Reilly Factor," Eastwood asserted, "I am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message ... just about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it."

Eastwood, who served as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, in the 1980s, added that he is "not supporting any politician at this time" but noted that, if Obama or any other politician "want to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it."

In the ad -- dubbed "Halftime in America" -- Eastwood extols the resiliency of the American spirit -- as exemplified by the auto industry's efforts to bounce back from its financial woes.

“This country can't be knocked out with one punch, we get right back up again," Eastwood growls in the ad.

    Watch the ad:

This was somehow interpreted by some -- notably among them, former Bush administration senior adviser Karl Rove -- as a show of support for President Barack Obama and the auto-industry bailout.

Declaring himself "offended" by the ad during a Fox News segment, Rove opined that the ad was "a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics."

“I was, frankly, offended by it,” Rove said. “I'm a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising and the best-wishes of the management which is benefited by getting a bunch of our money that they'll never pay back.”

Rove also suggested that Chrysler, et al, "feel the need to do something to repay their political patrons."

Watch the latest video at video.foxnews.com Eastwood's manager, Leonard Hirshan, was also dismissive of Rove and company's claim, telling New York magazine, "He rewrote it to make it suit his needs ... People have to understand that what he was doing was saying to America, ‘Get yourselves together – all of you – and make this a second half.' It's not a political thing.”

People are stupid. This commercial was awesome, especially because it really wasn't on anybody's "side", it was just stating the truth. Very inspirational :) Love you Clint Eastwood!

What is wrong? Rove and the present GOP know the only way they can win is when the country is divided, depressed, out of work, etc. They have no recovery plan, so they prey on dispair.

I didn't see it as pro-Obama at all...I saw it as pro-AMERICA. And, I like that.
      • Rich 3 months ago
I was a young republican for Barry Goldwater and have voted that way probably 80% of the time since. Rove,s comments are worthy of what ails the Republican Party. That all for me and my little entitled conservative group. We need to wake up and do what is good for the American people. All of them.

JULIE AND RICH. I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU.
As a Moderate Republican, I saw that ad as aspiring and Pro U.S. Rove is nut job and th eparty would be better off with out him opening that stinky hole hole he calls his mouth......

I saw it as a pro-America ad. Eastwood never mentions political parties, did not mention any candidates, didn't mention the president. As a liberal, I thought it was a great uplifting message and a reminder that we should all work together.

Obama WAS in the AD. How come you didn't see him?

How stupid do you have to be to believe that an ad extolling the virtues of America is somehow partisan? No party, no institution, no individual has a lock on patriotism. Making this country great is something we all must do TOGETHER. Sometimes the Republican answer is going to be the right one, sometimes the Democratic answer. That doesn't matter. What does matter is that we as a nation make the right choice.

I find it sad that all these pundits have to do all day is trash anything that puts any kind of positive light on this country. I am neither Dem or Repub but Proud to be an American and this commerical is the reason why. I value my right and the rights of others to speak their mind (and in some cases reveal just how ignorant they really are).

I am a conservative Republican, and I must tell you that I feel Karl Rove is an idiot. How he could have felt that this ad was politically motivated is beyond me. If anything it was a pro-American commercial praising American spirit. Rove may have felt "offended" by this commercial, but I am offended by politicians like Rove who only worry about retaining power and not doing what is right for America. It is politicians like him (and most other politicians both Democrat and Republican) who have ruined this country and will continue to do so if we don't make some serious changes.

Karl Rove is a good example of an old Mark Twain line: "Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience".

This was an inspirational ad. I am a conservative and I don't see how Rove can say it helps Obama. I hope the car companies do make a strong sustained comeback. The people in states that rely on the auto industry are hurting. It is important to keep in mind that when the employees have a paycheck they spend money and it helps small business which helps everyone including the government. Keep America strong!

I thought the ad was nonpolitical and beautiful. It's people like Karl Rove who make politics so scary.
    • Dapper Dave  •  Pleasanton, California  •  3 months ago
Bush and Obama were both involved in the auto-industry bailout, so why did Rove interpret the ad as being pro-Obama?
    • Roy Hobbs  •  3 months ago
It's not pro- or anti-Obama, it's pro-American. And if you don't like the ad, just leave teh country, we won't miss you one bit.
