The rapid cancellation of the cross-dressing comedy "Work It" has opened a slot for "Cougar Town" to return to ABC on February 14 with its third season set to air each Tuesday at 8:30pm.
The first season introduced Jules (Courtney Cox), a divorced mom to Travis (Dan Byrd), who was trying to re-enter the dating game, not-so-ably abetted by best buddies single gal Laurie (Busy Philipps), and married gal Ellie (Christa Miller). The show made fun of its unfortunate title, but viewers didn't seem to mind, as long as "Cougar Town" was funny. And it was.
Jules: "This is the first time on this trip it's been just the ladies."
Ellie: "It's an embarrassment of bitches."
The series has had to compete in its second season with "Dancing with the Stars," which forced it off the schedule and confused regular viewers, who wondered where the show had gone. This was too bad, as the second season was even better than the first, with the cul-de-sac crew really getting into a groove with each other.
"Cougar Town" is definitely still a starring vehicle for Courtney Cox, but she works well with others. Every character had their time to shine, with each one wackier than the next. But what really makes the show is the writing. The characters are all unique and all quick with a funny line. Jules's ex-husband Bobby (Brian Van Holt) is frequently the butt of jokes, but his free-wheeling lifestyle is also idolized by Ellie's husband Andy (Ian Gomez). Jules's neighbor and love interest Grayson (Josh Hopkins) may be the ostensible straight man of the show, but he still gets in a good one-liner from time to time.
Bobby, "I don't get this timezone crap. How can it be one time here and then another time at home. This isn't Star Trek."
Ellie, "I wonder what you're doing in Florida right now."
It is apt that "Cougar Town" returns on Valentine's Day, as the season's major arc will concern Jules's and Grayson's relationship. Grayson will propose to Jules in the first episode, and you can be sure that all of their friends and family wil have something to say about it. Rumored third season guest stars include Cox's ex, David Arquette and Sarah Chalke, as a love interest for Bobby.
"Cougar Town" has been on the cancellation bubble in the past, but hopefully the timing and scheduling will be right for the show to regain its audience and also acquire new viewers. It's really one of the funniest shows on television, when it's on. So pour yourself a "Big Carl" gigantic glass of red wine and join Jules & Co. on the couch for some laughs.
