The news was announced in a Lifetime blog post. How will it work? From now until June 3, "Project Runway" fans can vote for one of three former contestants using a poll system on the blog post itself or by voting on Twitter using hashtags.
The three former contestants who are in the running are Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman (Season 6), Valerie Mayen (Season 8), and Kate Pankoke (Season 11). The lucky winner will be announced during the Season 12 premiere.
There has been plenty of speculation about which designer will get the most votes. Kate Pankoke seems like a strong favorite, since she is still fresh in the minds of fans. However, she came in ninth place, meaning she was eliminated smack dab in the middle of the season. Her name may be familiar, but are her designs at all memorable?
Ra'mon was a veteran of Season 6, the first season to be aired on Lifetime after the show moved from the Bravo network. Ra'mon was the sixth person to be eliminated from the competition during his season. One thing Ra'mon has going for him is his work ethic. During the season's third episode, Ra'mon won a team challenge, despite the fact he wasn't the team leader. However, he was eliminated in his season for a combination of poor construction and poor fabric choice. Has he learned from his mistakes?
Of the three possibilities, sweet-natured Valerie may just be the contestant who gets the most votes. She might not have the same name recognition as Kate or the outlandish charm of Ra'mon, but what she does have is kindness. In the show's entire run, Valerie has arguably been the sweetest, most loveable female contestant (the male honors have to go to her season-mates Michael and Mondo). In a show that has a perennial problem with catty divas, mild-mannered Valerie was a breath of fresh air.
Since leaving "Runway," Valerie has worked with charitable organizations, won several artists grants, and has committed herself to teaching interns about the industry. She might be something of a dark horse, but Valerie Mayen may just be the most deserving of the three candidates.
