For the most part, "Top Chef" is an upbeat, entertaining reality competition show. But every few seasons, the show gets downright creepy. Over the years, a number of strange, weird, and unlikely coincidences have plagued contestants on the show. Conspiracy? Unlikely. But some of these strange coincidences do make fans wonder if there was a curse afoot. Here is a rundown of some of the creepiest coincidences in "Top Chef" history.
The Casey curse
In Season 3, the Miami chefs soon discovered that there was a "Casey Curse." Casey Thompson, a beloved fan favorite, seemed to be an unwitting party to the curse. As the competition went on, any chefs who got friendly with Casey or worked with Casey got the axe. For example, in Episode 8, Casey's fellow Orange Team member Sara N. got eliminated.
The "curse" even extended past Season 3. Many fans argue the reason Carla Hall lost was because Casey was her sous chef, and talked her into a food preparation technique that she was uncomfortable with. The "curse" is really just a made-up thing: it seemed like everyone who got close to Casey was dropping like flies … but that was probably just because Casey was so sweet and bubbly that it was hard for people NOT to become friends with her.
The curse of the Black Hammer
Antonia Lofaso, who appeared on both Season 4 and the All Star season of "Top Chef," is perhaps best known by her nickname: the Black Hammer. In her original season, as well as in All Stars, all those who were partnered with Antonia seemed destined to get eliminated. Many of her fellow competitors from the All Star season really believed in this curse, as shown in this video.
In the All Star season alone, Antonia's curse was believed to have contributed to the eliminations of Jen, Casey, Tiffani, Jaime, Marcel, and even Tiffany. Chefs from Season 4 who fell due to the influence of the Hammer included Valerie and Zoi, though it should be noted none of Antonia's team members from the Block Party challenge were eliminated.
The birthday curse
In Season 5, a number of chefs were eliminated from the competition on the same day as their birthday. Many other chefs in different seasons became wary of competing on their birthday, all due to the string of birthday eliminations back in Season 5. Among them: Stefan from the Seattle season, and Arnold from Season 7.
