"Hit; Run," the Season 7 finale episode of "Criminal Minds," was the typical bloodbath expected from the show, in atypical fashion. The unsubs are a team of bank robbers rather than a creepy guy in a basement, making the two-parter one of the most exciting and fast-paced finales in the show's history.
Two of the bank robbers are sadistic serial killers, who get their kicks by killing someone slowly at each robbery, and putting on a show for the cameras for later enjoyment. They purposely involve the cops, as the ultimate rush of danger.
Things don't go according to plan when JJ's (AJ Cook) boyfriend, Will (Josh Stewart), gets caught up in the action. The unsubs "hit" the bank and "run," leading to a surprise proposal. Another surprise is thrown in to balance out the universe and make the wedding bittersweet, as Penelope (Kirsten Vangsness) would say.
The Hit
The bank heist involves an initial team of three robbers. Two of them are brothers, and the third is a sadistic woman, Izzy (Tricia Helfer), who likes to watch people suffer. Will and his partner are first on the scene, and catch the robbers as they try to escape. Will's partner is shot dead, and Will responds by shooting one of the brothers, Oliver (Seth Laird).
Later the unharmed brother, Chris (Evan Jones), agrees to let a few hostages go if Will goes in as payment for shooting Oliver. In a shocking moment, Will is shot within seconds of entering the bank. He is kept alive as leverage, and Izzy and Chris escape with Will in tow.
The Run
After the robbers escape, the BAU team figures out that one of the hostages, Matthew Downs, was actually one of the sadistic robbers. Izzy shoots Chris and leaves him in an alley, then picks up Matthew.
Izzy and Matthew know where Will lives, and take him home. In order to save his son, Henry (Mekhai Andersen), Will must leave Izzy with him while Matthew takes Will to a train station where he ties him up with explosives.
All of the BAU team members have a role in saving Henry and Will. Penelope, Spencer (Matthew Gray Gubler), and Rossi (Joe Mantegna) were responsible for figuring out what was going on in the confusion. JJ beats Izzy with some impressive martial arts moves. Morgan (Shemar Moore) and Matthew fight until Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) shoots Matthew dead. Prentiss (Paget Brewster) saves Will at the last second (literally) by figuring out how to disable the bomb, which is a huge sigh of relief for fans.
The Surprise
After all the excitement, Will tries out his proposal again, to which JJ (finally) says "yes." They are a very cute couple, with an even cuter son. They deserve some happiness. For an even bigger surprise, the couple get married quickly, in a sweet ceremony with only their closest friends and relatives.
To balance out the wedding, Prentiss decides to leave for London to head up Interpol's office there. She already left the show once, so she will perhaps not be as missed as one of the other characters. This time, Prentiss is able to say a proper goodbye to each team member with a final dance at the wedding.
