It was a hot and spicy week for "Dancing With the Stars" pro dancer Karina Smirnoff as she took on Latin Week with a twist! The longtime "DWTS" alum -- who's partnered with Super Bowl champ Jacoby Jones -- tackled a salsa, as well as a jive, in this week's dance-off challenge. But it was that wild salsa -- and one move in particular -- that had people talking.
Some serious heatFor Latin Week, Karina and Jacoby's lift-happy salsa came complete with maracas and bongos, and it contained some serious moves -- including one that looked serious. While the NFL star has mastered the technique of jumping over his pro partner's head, this time it appeared that Jacoby cut it super close as he barely leaped over Karina as she grabbed his legs.
While the camera angle made it look like a dangerous stunt, in an interview with On the Red Carpet, Karina explained, "That's a really popular salsa move. Except normally people go up and down, but we wanted to make it a little more exciting, so we went back. Which obviously made it that much more … but the shock value was there. He nailed it; he didn't fall; we nailed that salsa. In my book, he got three 10s."
Jacoby admitted he was afraid he'd crush his pint-sized pro partner with the daredevil move, although he joked of his leap frog status: "She's taking advantage of me… I think she's using me as a boy toy."
Quake shakeHead judge judge Len Goodman compared the couple's sassy salsa to an earthquake, which got Karina thinking: "I would much rather not compare us to something as destructive as an earthquake," she said. "Think Mardi Gras, think New Orleans, think party, think Miami South Beach. I don't necessarily think earthquake is the right way to look at a salsa. But I really hope we did shake the ballroom."
But while Karina and Jacoby got their highest score of the season (27 out of 30 points) for said salsa, they missed out on three extra points with the dance-off challenge against Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy. For a split second on Tuesday night's results show, they were even "in jeopardy."
Even though they were safe from elimination (comedian Andy Dick went home), in an after-show interview, Jacoby said hearing the word "jeopardy" ticked him off. But Karina remained positive. "You just have to think of it as the game show," she joked. "All I was gonna say is 'I'll take judges' pick for 200.'"
For next week, Jacoby has a promise: "You woke this animal up; now you're going to get what you asked for."
We just hope it includes more flying leaps!
The next episode of "Dancing With the Stars" Season 16 airs on Monday, 5/6 at 8 PM ET on ABC.
