What exactly constitutes a "star" on "Dancing With the Stars"? Well, let's just say reality bites this show every season! And while rumor has it that some of the beloved professional dancers may be taking a hiatus from the TV dancing competition for Season 16 (the buzz is that Derek Hough may be dunzo), it's the celeb contestants who have fans really speculating, and that includes the token reality stars who turn up on the show every season.
Check out these reality stars who've been on the "Dancing With the Stars" rumor radar for Season 16.
Emily MaynardAccording to Radar Online, last season's "The Bachelorette" star, Emily Maynard, may be ready to try her luck on the dance floor. While Radar cites an agreement Em made with producers when she signed on to star on the ABC dating show. Maynard told Wetpaint, "I have no idea where those rumors came from ...[but] I never said I would do 'Bachelorette,' and here I am, so I've learned to never say never to anything."
If Emily is able to extend her 15 minutes of reality TV fame (she was also a "winner" on Brad Womack's season of "The Bachelor"), she could end up a mirror ball winner like fellow franchise alum Melissa Rycroft. And she already has a willing dance partner to boot! "DWTS" pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy told Life & Style, "I have no idea [if Maynard's doing it]. If she did it, I'd love to dance with her."
Honey Boo BooHoney Boo Boo and her mama, June, will have plenty of time to stick to the pageant circuit. The TLC stars wouldn't exactly be welcome with open arms to the "Dancing" cast. Pro dancer Karina Smirnoff laughed off suggestions that the show would be better with Boo Boo in the ballroom, saying, "No ... I think we're pretty good with the people we have on the show."
Maksim Chmerkovskiy has also chimed in on the subject, telling "Extra," " I think that some, not all, of our stars have been of questionable backgrounds. But I don't see Honey Boo Boo or any of her relatives having earned the right, because I think it's an honor to be on the show."
Kim and Kyle Richards"Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Kim Richards has long been on the list of possible "DWTS" contenders, and in 2011, she even tweeted that she was sad she wasn't chosen for the cast. But how about her little sis, Kyle? Kyle Richards recently told Hollywood Life, "I don't have aspirations to do ['DWTS'], but I have learned to never say never! The reason is because that takes hours and hours of the day, and with the show I am doing now, I have my kids with me, and we shoot during the summer so my kids are off, and I get to bring them with me. I am able to be with my kids and film at the same time." But, hey, she pulled off training for "Stars in Danger: The High Dive," so you never know!
Deena Nicole CorteseIf you think a "Jersey Shore" star isn't star enough to darken this ballroom, think again. Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino showed us his bust-a-moves back in Season 11. (Poor Karina Smirnoff!) It also wouldn't be a "DWTS" season without a wannabe Twitter campaign, which is how Deena Nicole Cortese's recent tweet reads. The "Jersey Shore" alum tweeted: "I love dancing :) tweeties do you think I'd be good on dancing with the stars #DWTS?? I feel like I'd kick butt lol." (Hey Deena, pole dancing doesn't count!)
Meanwhile, don't expect to see another "Dancing With the Stars" all-stars cast any time soon -- and that bodes well for these newbie reality stars! In light of last season's disappointing ratings, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee has already promised that for its upcoming cycle, the show would go back to recruiting fresh talent, not experienced dancers. "It turns out people like to see bad dancing as much as they do good dancing," he said.
So does that mean we could see Kate Gosselin come back?
"Dancing With the Stars" Season 16 will premiere on March 18 at 8 PM ET on ABC.
