'Desperate Housewives': Gabrielle Solis is a Princess with a Heart

Eva Longoria Plays the Fun, yet Spoiled Gaby

Gabrielle Solis, played by actress Eva Longoria, is by far the most spoiled character on "Desperate Housewives," but when it comes to her friends, she can drop the princess in a heartbeat.

Eva Longoria has been playing Gabrielle Solis since first episode of "Desperate Housewives" in 2004. The Texas born actress was previously a soap opera star and model, a role she has continued as the show became more popular. She has been married and divorced twice, first to "General Hospital" actor Tyler Christopher and more recently to basketball superstar Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs. Longoria received a Golden Globe nomination (2006) for her acting and has garnered numerous accolades for her beauty. She has been listed among the "Most Beautiful People" by "People en Espanol"; "Maxim's" "Hottest Female Star"; and one of the "Sexiest Women 2008" by "FHM." It was not an easy life for Gabrielle in the early years. She was born in a small Mexican town to a poor family. Her father died when she was young and her stepfather abused her. She ran away and made her way to New York City, where she became a top fashion model. Businessman Carlos Solis fell in love with her and she decided she would enjoy the life of a rich executive's wife. Unfortunately, she found herself bored living in the suburbs instead of the city. It was at this point we met her in the first season of "Desperate Housewives," and she was not dealing with her husband's long hours very maturely. She had an affair with John the gardener, who was quite a hunk, but also not quite an adult.

While Gabby was enjoying her affair, Carlos was ready to start a family and he wouldn't take no for an answer. He switched his wife's birth control pills and before she knew it she was pregnant. Carlos was not so happy to hear that another man could possibly be the father and his rage landed him in jail. The couple got back together, but Gabrielle had lost the baby and was unable to carry another. An attempt at using a surrogate ended up with another affair in the house, this one by Carlos.

Gabrielle and Carlos divorced and she married politician Victor Lang in Season three. It was a short lived marriage when she realized that he only wanted to be with her to get the Latino vote. Gabby didn't spend too much time morning when Victor was killed during a tornado, the same one that caused Carlos to lose his eyesight. Despite all their problems, Gabrielle and Carlos found their way back together and managed to have two children, Celia and Juanita. At this point Carlos had no job and Gabby managed to live the life of poverty and take care of her blind husband. It was something we never thought she was capable of, but the audience would learn that this woman could do whatever is necessary.

There were some rocky times for Gabrielle during the fifth and sixth seasons, but she made it through and soon her husband had his sight back and was back to working and making the big bucks. Gabby was happy being the rich girl again. In season seven, though, her world would come crashing down in a way she would never recover when she would learn that her daughter Juanita was not really her daughter, but her real baby had been switched at birth. She found her biological daughter and then gave her up when she realized how much it was hurting Juanita .

The seventh season would prove to be the most difficult imaginable for Gabrielle Solis. In addition to losing her biological daughter, she would be stalked by her stepfather until, in the final episode of the season, she killed him in self-defense. As they had done before, the women of Wisteria Lane stuck together, with Susan, Bree, Lynette and Renee helped Gabrielle get rid of the body.
