‘Desperate Housewives’: Too Many Stories Lead to Too Little Excitement

"Desperate Housewives" has always managed to keep us in suspense with different story lines going on at the same time, but the need to have every character involved in the final season appears to have the show taking off on too many tangents.

Lynette and Tom appear to be going in circles. He wants to get back together, she doesn't. She wants to break Tom and his new girlfriend up, he's happy with the way things are. If this wasn't a classic television plot for the characters getting together in the final episode we might be interested, but we all know what's going to happen so let's give the Scavo family something else to talk about like - where's the baby?

Susan has become the student of the great Andre Zeller, a famed painter who seems to hate everyone and everything, with the exception of his own paintings. She is determined to bring him around and manages to get a bit of human emotion out of him when he is around his son on Halloween. There's only one reason we care at all about this story line - Miguel Ferrer. This wonderful actor will keep us tuning into this story until it has played out.

Rene announces to Ben that she has not slept with anyone since her divorce. Huh? Haven't we seen this woman take off to the bedroom with at least a dozen men? Are we really supposed to believe that she chased all these men down and then bid them farewell? The relationship of Rene and Ben is plain vanilla and it probably won't get any better if they hit the sack.

Gaby is being Gaby, totally caught up in herself. She managed to alienate all of the women on the PTA by pushing her wealth and beauty in their faces. She garnered a bit of sympathy when Carlos showed up to an event drunk, but it doesn't seem to have changed Gaby. There was a time when this woman had to support her children on little money while Carlos was blind. It would be nice to see a glimmer of that gal now.

Of course, the biggest storyline of all revolves around the killing of Gabby's stepfather by Carlos. It has made all the housewives into nervous wrecks, and turned Carlos into an alcoholic. How long can they keep the secret? Well, it doesn't look like it will be very long as the body is no longer buried in the woods. Is it Chuck who has the body and is he going to use it to get revenge on Bree? We'll just have to keep tuning in to "Desperate Housewives" to find out.
