'Desperate Housewives': The Ups and Downs of Carlos Solis

Life's been quite a roller coaster for Carlos Solis on "Desperate Housewives." The character has been rich and poor, respected and jailed. It looks like he's found his season, though, and despite having to deal with a few problems with high maintenance wife/ex-wife/wife again Gabrielle, and a baby switch that has left a bit of emotional turmoil, Carlos is on top of his game.

Ricardo Antonio Chavira, a former college golf player who was born in Mexico, has played Carlos Solis since the character was introduced in the first season of "Desperate Housewives." While Gaby was sleeping with the very young gardener, Carlos was trying to hide some white collar crimes that kept his business bringing in the bucks, and ended up in jail for a bit. In season two, Carlos was rehabilitated as he found religion, and then found himself in an affair with the maid - who the couple had hired as a surrogate.

The rocky road continued for Carlos in the third season of "Desperate Housewives" as he and Gabrielle decided to divorce, despite the fact that they had a baby on the way through Xiao-Mei. Things got a bit less complicated when it turned out that, due to an embryo switch, the baby wasn't theirs. Carlos had a brief affair with neighbor Edie, but by season four he was back with Gabrielle and all seemed well. That never lasts long in the world of nighttime soaps, and Carlos was soon blackmailed and blinded!

Season five begins with a five year leap in time and Carlos and Gaby - though broke - are married with two daughters, Juanita and Celia, even though the doctor had told her she couldn't have a child. Carlos got his eyesight back and even became an executive again, bringing the family back to a life of riches. There were just a few minor bumps in the road for Carlos in the sixth season, and everything seemed great at the beginning of the seventh year. That is until Carlos found out that his daughter Juanita is not really his biological child, as she was switched at birth!

There was one more unusual event at the beginning of season seven, but it wasn't in the script. Fans got a surprising look at a clean-shaven Carlos that was unrecognizable. It actually wasn't a change that producers had in store for the character; it turns out that it was a surprise that Ricardo Antonio Chavira brought to the set. It seems that the actor used his hiatus to perform in "A Streetcar Named Desire" at the Guthrie Theater. The new look didn't go over well with fans, and Chavira was quickly back in his beard.
