What Does Valentine's Day Hold for 'Modern Family'?

Somewhere in the land of holiday elves and fairies, Cupid is lacing up his bow and greasing his arrows for his yearly decent into the land of mere mortals when he fills eyes with hearts and our hearts with warmth. As America prepares for Cupid and Valentine's Day once again, we'll undoubtedly be treated to all kinds of festivities on our favorite television shows, as well as those very special made-for-TV movies. One series that always seems to rise to the occasion of celebrating love and marriage is ABC's "Modern Family." In particular, Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) Dunphy approach the holiday of love with unusual zeal. Here, then, are a few ways that the Dunphys might celebrate Valentine's Day in 2012.

    The Usual

Claire and Phil don their alter egos and head out to a fancy bar and hotel, where they "meet" as a couple of random strangers. They role play all through the night, undergoing a miniature courtship that ultimately leads to a romantic encounter. It's great fun to watch and fairly innovative, but it's been done, so it would be nice to see something different.

    Road Show

Without stretching themselves too far creatively, ABC could send the love birds to some nearby city under the pretense of attending different professional conventions. While there, they might catch each other's eye across a crowded room, and then the usual zaniness could ensue. A slight twist can sometimes liven up an old routine.

    Phil Forgets

Phil is usually the more doting of the dynamic duo, but it could make for some interesting moments if Claire were all in for Valentine's Day while Phil let it slip his mind completely. Maybe he could stand up Claire for their usual rendezvous, or maybe he could just more mundanely fail to show up at home with flowers or candy. Either way, his out-of-character moment might cause some distress for his wife, who is slightly prone to neuroticism.

    Claire Has Big News

What the Dunphy household could really use is another mouth to feed, and what better time to spring the news of such a blessed event than Valentine's Day? Claire could buy Phil a box of roses and hide the completed pregnancy test inside, or she might bring it up during their yearly pickup routine. "I'm out celebrating because I just found out that I'm pregnant!" After Phil picked himself up off the floor, he would treat us all to the joyful tears of a clown.
