Emergency Alert System to Be Tested Wednesday

A nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will occur on Wednesday at 2 p.m. EST.

The test, which will access the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a public-alert mechanism, will be transmitted through television and radio, and will last about 30 seconds.

"This is only a test," Craig Fugate, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, stressed in a video detailing the plan.

The EAS can be activated by the president to inform the public during a crisis. It has already been tested and used on the local level, and this will be the first nationwide test of it.
