Exclusive: Hugh Laurie Clears Up Rumors About the End of House

A New York newspaper alleged this week that Hugh Laurie had opted to end the run of Fox's House because he was tired of the show. The story, though, was based on old quotes from Laurie, given to a UK newspaper long before Fox announced the end of the show. In this exclusive statement, Laurie responds to the story:

Some newspapers, obviously dissatisfied by the statement we released last week, have suggested that "the truth" — a modern journalistic shorthand for "not even remotely the truth but it's creepy enough so let's go with it" — behind our joint decision was that I was sick of going to work. The evidence for this was a remark I made five years ago about a different subject.

Let me say unequivocally that I love my job, and work harder at it than most journalists work at theirs. As we explained in our press release, we were trying to preserve some of the character's mystique; we never wanted to over-stay our welcome. Very possibly, we could have continued with a re-worked formula — House gets a job in a shoe shop and high jinks ensue — but none of us could face that. We wanted to keep the band together and go out with as much dignity as we could muster.

I realize that plan is looking a little scruffy now, thanks to this petty rebuttal, but what the heck. I had to put the record straight.

As House himself has repeatedly said, "everybody lies."

    Hugh Laurie

I used to love HOUSE and the old format. But the change this last season has not been good. Seem like the heart dropped out of the show. Was it Omar Epps ?

I agree with you wholeheartedly! As a friend mentioned, he puts a human face on medicine. He will be sorely missed. I think the network is making a big mistake in cancelling the show. I don't see anything that could replace it.

I love Hugh Laurie and will miss him, but not the show, it has gotten too old and formulaic and I don't care for the characters like I did in the beginning. Good luck to Hugh & his music and future endeavors. Cheerio!

As I watched last night's episode I realized they could go on, they just need to get back to basics. Diagnosing and treating patients. No hi-jinks. I thoroughly enjoyed the medical part of it and will miss that a lot. :(

I would have called a halt simply because of the departure of Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein). It has left a tremendous hole. One that could never be filled. Good luck to Mr. Laurie & everyone who participated in the series from the very beginning to the end. Thanks for everything.

I love the show and will miss it a lot. There have been times when I thought I had House figured out, but he has always surprised me. That's the pleasure of watching the show-you never know if he's going to be a cynic, an #$%$ or show an actual human side to his personality. I wish the entire cast good luck with their future endeavors. This has been a fun experience. Thanks, Hugh.

House is one of my very favorite shows. It has everything: great actors who fit well together, good writing, drama, laughter, tears, surprises.
