High school football quarterback Finn (and perfect songbird Rachel at first seemed like an odd pairing on the hit Fox musical "Glee." Some thought that Finn should wind up with his original high school sweetheart and one-time cheerleader, Quinn. Yet when she cheated on him and got pregnant with Finn's best friend's baby, she didn't seem quite good enough for golden boy Finn.
Rachel is by all accounts very sweet, and at times almost sickeningly nice. She seemed like a much better pairing for Finn after all. Yet whereas Finn's aspirations in life seem to start and stop with football, Rachel has some huge dreams that involve running off to New York after graduation, attending a fancy performing arts school, and hopefully being a Broadway star, too. Recently, Finn had a college coach tell him he likely wasn't talented enough to play college ball, and it appeared that his only hopes for a life after college were either to run his stepdad's garage or follow Rachel to New York City and live in her shadow while working at a menial job.
The vast differences between these two were really underlined recently during the holiday episode when Rachel showed off her materialistic side and told Finn she wanted five items off of her Christmas list. All of the items were pricey, and Finn couldn't afford a single one. Rachel was persistent and made it clear that she thought she deserved these finer things in life. Finn offered to give her a charitable donation of sorts by buying her a pig that would be fed to the hungry overseas. She was truly offended by the gift of a pig, but later he bought her a star and named it after himself with a very touching explanation as to why it wouldn't be named after her. This was followed by the gift of diamond earrings, which she promptly said they would return.
While Rachel and Finn ended this little gift exchange drama on a high note, this only served to add a huge exclamation mark to the fact that these two just are on different planes as far as who they are and what they want out of life. Finn is a simple guy with simple dreams, and for Rachel, the world just doesn't seem to be big enough to contain her. Most recently, "Glee" has revealed that Finn's after-graduation plans may even include some time in military service.
While these two have pure feelings for each other, the fact remains that they are headed in two different directions in life. This likely will not be one of those high school sweetheart romances that ends with marriage, but rather with a bittersweet breakup as they pursue their own dreams.
