Former 'Idol' Lauren Alaina Flubs National Anthem At Lions/Packers Game: 'I Messed Up'

She performed live in front of a television audience of millions week in and week out on Season 10 of "American Idol," but at the Detroit Lions/Green Bay Packers game on Thanksgiving, Lauren Alaina's nerves got the best of her as she flubbed the National Anthem.

Unlike Christina Aguilera, who, at last year's Super Bowl actually sang the wrong lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner," but kept singing, on Thursday, Lauren completely went silent for about five seconds in the middle of the song.

"What so proudly we hailed, through the twi..." she trailed off into silence.

Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin Malone on NBC comedy "The Office," was one of the many fans who caught Lauren's singing snafu and Tweeted about it, quickly propelling her name into a top 10 Twitter trending topic.

"Oh Lauren Alaina... Poor you. Poor poor you...." he wrote.

Lauren was able to jump back in on the line, "Whose broad stripes and bright stars..." and, with a smile on her face, finished to the delight of the patrons in the sold-out stadium, who cheered loudly.

FOX's Joe Buck, the TV announcer for the game, summed it up best, saying, "It's all about how you finish."

On Thursday afternoon, Lauren took ownership for her flub in response to a Tweet of encouragement from fellow "Idol" alum, Kellie Pickler.

"HEY DOLL! YOU HANDLED YOURSELF LIKE A PRO! SEND THE BULLIES MY WAY & I'LL TELL EM' WHERE TO GO," Kellie Tweeted.

"thank you so much," Lauren responded. "I'm not a robot. I have No excuses. I messed up. You know what can ya do. At Least didn't fall down again."

Audiences used to sing the national anthem. We no longer do that. The anthem has been yet another performance by "artists" trying to one up each other.
      • Ian 6 months ago
You know that they are there to lead the singing, not to keep you from doing it, right? You wanna belt it out, do so!
      • Annette 6 months ago
I miss that too. At least we should be encouraged to sing along by the announcer..
      • John 6 months ago
I agree also, I'm not a singer but I used to really belt it out there and it made me feel I was proud and part of the event.

      Dear NFL,
Quit hiring big names to sing the National Anthem; instead select a choir/glee club from an area high school to do the singing. Make a donation to the school district in the amount that you would have paid the celebrity. And make sure that the school selected is a public school, not a private school; they can use all the financial help.

I bet not even one half of Americans can sing the anthem correctly.

No more celebrities! Let a local school or church choir sing it and encourage the crowd to sing along. Celebs are useless.
      • lame-o“O”bozo 6 months ago
good idea! even though I do believe the singers are only messing up because of the delayed voice that comes back to them still local singing groups would be great..

From Christina Aguilera's now infamous Superbowl Anthem flub to today's snafu, I am seriously starting to wonder: Why are so many singers having trouble with the US National Anthem? Either they attempt to dazzle us with reverbratta and the result is inconprehensible or they just forget the words and hum. For this year's Superbowl, I just want someone to sing the National Anthem solidly and on key. Please?

Without exception, I always mute the sound when any celebrity tries to sing our National Anthem. They either try to jazz it up or they forget the lyrics. On the other hand, I always enjoy listening to a member of our armed forces or police or firefighters sing. They treat our National Anthem and God Bless America with respect.

Since this keeps happening frequentlly ... why don't they use singers who can do the job right?
    • Lonnie  •  Atlanta, United States  •  6 months ago
If the National Anthem ever appeared on a Lady Gaga album and then played on the TV and radio 50 times a day, then everyone in America would be able to sing it.
    • Alien509  •  Las Vegas, United States  •  6 months ago
Why don't they just have the lyrics of the national anthem on the jumbotrom so that these singers will stop embarrasing themselves. Most stadiums have a big screen, just have the lyrics up there. Somehow most of us knows the words but when singing in front of thousands and knowing millions more watching on tv, you tend to get nervous and forget the words I guess.

Here is the problem , In every other nation on this planet, you will here every citizen and small children singing their national songs or anthems flawlessly, why ? They are taught from an early age and sing them in their schools. In America, the ACLU and progressive liberal teachers and their school systems have dropped the pledge of alliegence and the national anthem before school begins or at their sporting events. One immigrant or anti-Christian parent calls the ACLU and files a law suit and the school administrators fold under the pressure like an accordian, that is why our youth does not have pride and patriotism in their own country not to mention that they do not have a grasp how our anthem is sung. THAT IS WHY THEY SCREW IT UP.

If they were still allowed to sing the Natinoal Anthem in school growing up they would remember the words forever.
    • AkuraOO  •  6 months ago
Man invents tools to use them! Why deny her the use of a teleprompter especially when the politicians are allowed to use them?
    • Marty  •  6 months ago
Is this a surprise most of the people in this country can't even speak english
    • Kevin  •  6 months ago
It's a shame how many professional singers flub the anthem. Since their sole job is the memorize words to a song, they either are not professionals or most likely, have such little pride in the USA to take the time and learn the words they're about to sing.
    • Nataliaa  •  6 months ago
We put i-pads in our elem. schools but nobody knows the National Anthem in todays schools.. All us people should be doing something! This is supposed to be a democracy! How do we change the way the next generation is learning!
    • Sugapie  •  6 months ago
I learned the song in school. We used to sing this and other patriotic songs. Now of course, the school system has stopped with the singing of these songs along with the banning of the pledge of allegiance. I guess it's politically incorrect to be patriotic.

If you do not know the National Anthem of your own country, learn it!!!! If you are going to sing it in front of millions of people, Memorize it!!!! National Anthems are the most important songs of any country. They herald the good and the pride that all of us should have for the place where we were born. It is something we learn since first grade (in some countries). There is no excuse to forget the words, there is no need to embelish the melody with unnecessary wooos and waaaas! Sing it beautifuly, simple, with emotion, sing it as if it truly comes from your heart!!!!!!
    • Taylor  •  6 months ago
Why must we always have some "important" idol sing the national anthem? I dont mind that she messed up, everyone does. Who knows why maybe she just paniced, and it wasnt disrespectful. Regardless, I would rather not worry about the person singing it but instead worry about all those who refuse to but their hands over their heart or refuse to remove their covers. Just because she is on the spotlight doesnt mean she should be the only one getting anger poured on her.
