Well, "Game of Thrones" has done it again. As if we didn't have enough fascinating characters, the third season has thrown some new variables into the mix, including a malevolent and mysterious warlock, a cunning and ruthless merchant prince, and a mysterious masked woman who seems to know much more than she really should.
Pyat Pree
Certainly the most fascinating and ominous character in the second season is Pyatt Pree, a sinister warlock who has an uncanny ability to appear in more than one place at once. Indeed, he has already proven himself a cunning schemer, even going so far as to kidnap the dragons belonging to Daenerys. He has also shown that he is willing to kill to ensure his own power, so it remains to be seen who else will fall to his sinister machinations, and whether the Mother of Dragons will be able to defeat him.
Xaro Xhoan Daxos
Xaro, the merchant prince who was at first the only one to befriend Dany, has already proven himself deceptively gentle while also willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure his own path to power, up to and including having his own associates among the Thirteen brutally murdered. Clearly, he is a cunning and deceptive man, and it seems that he is also going to use Dany for his own ends. Whether he will succeed in that endeavor, or whether she will be able to defeat him (perhaps even killing him) remains to be seen. Will it happen this season or next? Only time will tell.
Quaithe
If there is one character from Qarth that has stolen the show, however, it is Quaithe, the mysterious masked woman who has already made herself known to Ser Jorah and may yet prove to be an ally for the young Mother of Dragons. However, we just don't know whose side she's on -- if she's even on a side -- because we know so little about her. Though she has relatively little screen time, she still has left an indelible impression, and we can only hope that the show will continue to shed more light on this fascinating and enigmatic character.
Clearly, there is a lot to love about this second season of one of HBO's best shows. Although the season is almost over, these three characters will have a very large role to play in the last three episodes, and so we all wait with excitement to see what those roles will entail.
