In court on Friday, CNN reports Zimmerman apologized to Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, who were in the room. He said on the stand, "I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son."

"I did not know how old he was," Zimmerman added. "I thought that he was a little bit younger than I am and I did not know if he was armed or not."

The case caused a national debate over race and self-defense.

According to police, the African-American teenager was fatally shot by Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla. on Feb. 26 while walking back from a convenience store. Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, was a neighborhood watch volunteer and claimed Martin attacked him. He was initially released without charges after claiming self-dense.

His bond was set with several conditions including GPS monitoring and no contact with the victim's family.
