Watch GH Emmy Winner Nancy Lee Grahn's Belated Speech: You May Laugh, You Will Cry

Due to a previous commitment, General Hospital‘s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) was at her sister’s lake house on Saturday when her name was announced as the winner of this year’s Daytime Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. And while the soaps vet offered up an ersatz acceptance speech via Twitter that night, the Chicago-based daytime talker Windy City Live on Monday offered her a platform for a proper appreciation.

Grahn relates that upon hearing her name called in the awards ceremony — her first win since 1989, for Santa Barbara — she and her kin were left “confused…. There was sort of this moment of people looking around and going, ‘What happened?’ And then it was like, ‘You idiot, why weren’t you there?!’”

Presented with her statue by Windy City Live, Grahn launches into the speech she would have given, thanking “the actors that voted for me, who I suspect might have been slightly intoxicated.”

Then, after giving props to family and friends, and even as they tried to rush her offstage, Grahn says, “I wouldn’t go until I handed this to my daughter” Kate, who was standing just off-stage at the talk show. “This is the first time I’m telling her this: This is yours. When you go to college… you’ll take this… because I want you to remember that life is good, and that if you do what you love in life and you do the best that you can and you have faith that all is well, it will be.”

But really, you need to watch the exchange between mom and daughter here to appreciate it:
