The greatest moms from sitcoms managed to hold their families together while often stealing the scene from the main characters. These ladies of TV were some of the best comedic actresses of their time. These are the women of sitcom history that I've chosen to make the list in no particular order.
Played by Roseanne Barr, Roseanne was in the business of being in everyone else's business. You could not accuse her of being an uninvolved parent. She was probably the closest to most moms in reality.
Played by Marian Ross on "Happy Days" this TV mom was in charge of keeping everyone happy. She even managed to mother the Fonz.
Played by Jean Stapleton on "All in the Family" Edith managed to act dumb while raising a daughter who spoke her mind. She was even able to keep the politically incorrect Archie in line when she had to.
Lucille Ball on "I Love Lucy" had the first reality TV pregnancy and motherhood. Watched on live TV weekly we saw how she doted on little Ricky while still managing to get into trouble with her husband and his show.
Played by Debra Jo Rupp on "That 70's Show" Kitty did her best in a world that was changing by the minute. She was the neighborhood mother to any stray kid that came along and kept her husband Red from doing harm to any of them.
Played by Patricia Richardson on "Home Improvement" Jill had to keep three growing boys and one grown up one, her husband Tim "The Tool Man," in line weekly. She always did it in a loving and funny way.
Patricia Heaton, as Debra Barone on "Everybody Loves Raymond" may have had the most challenging job of all sitcom moms. Living right across the street from a heavily involved mother-in-law and most of the rest of Ray's family, Debra raised twin boys and an older daughter with only a few meltdowns.
Though often only supporting characters, these moms from sitcoms helped us laugh through some of life's biggest crisis. I'm sure many more will follow as this list of funny moms shows they are the glue that holds the sitcom family together.
