As Callie Torres fights for her life in Season 2, Episode 18 of "Grey's Anatomy," fans are given another reminder of the fact that she rarely gets a chance at happiness. Dr. Torres is among the Seattle Grace hospital doctors that have the worst luck. A musical backdrop in this episode with the potential loss of her baby adds yet another devastating event that makes this character justified in singing the blues. If her frustrated outbursts due to betrayal and judgment in previous episodes are any indication, Dr. Torres does not need any more bad news in her personal life.
When George O'Malley cheated on Dr. Torres with Izzie, it appeared that she had no one to trust in the workplace. O'Malley's extramarital affair brought Callie's personal business to the hospital, which made it a very awkward working environment between the three of them, and the other doctors and residents. Callie verbally lashed out against Izzie in front of other co-workers, making their affair known, but this did not mend her broken heart.
Callie's unlucky streak continued when she switched over to the lesbian path and introduced her father to Arizona in Season 5, Episode 20. Instead of being supportive, Callie's father attempted to transfer her to another hospital and then cut her off financially when she refused to leave or end her relationship with Arizona. By this time, Callie was not only disrespected by her husband, but also became an outcast from the rest of her family. This leaves her with essentially no support system, which makes it understandable that she wants a baby so much. At least a child would love her unconditionally, she reasons.
Despite being an accident, Callie's pregnancy and birth of the baby may be the only thing that is helping her maintain her emotional well-being since this is something that has not yet brought disappointment into her life. Arizona seems to have good intentions, but there is still something about this doctor that makes her appear a little shady. This may cause the personal life of Callie Torres to remain on shaky ground. The only stable relationship that she has is her friendship with Mark Sloan, who has his own personal issues to deal with since he remains focused on Lexie.
