This Oct. 14 episode of "Homeland" is called "State of Independence," but despite the title, all of the characters seem to have a hard time finding the freedom and liberty that they truly desire.
At the airport in Lebanon, Saul is detained before his flight. Airport security (who is implied to be secretly working for Hezbollah) searches Saul's diplomatic briefcase and finds a memory card hidden in the lining. They take the card and let Saul go to his flight. On the plane, it is revealed that the real memory card from last episode was hidden in the lock of the suitcase, not in the lining. This memory card has proof that Brody planned to become a suicide bomber.
Elsewhere, Brody is contacted by Roya, who reveals that the tailor in Gettysburg (first introduced last season) is in danger of being discovered by the CIA. Because this tailor is the man who made Brody's suicide vest last season, Brody would be at great personal risk if the tailor was brought in for questioning.
Brody picks up the tailor and attempts to bring him to a pre-determined safe house. While Brody thinks they may have been followed, he is able to lose the car that he believes was trailing him. However, Brody gets a flat tire on the drive to the safe house, and there's no jack in the back of the car. Brody attempts to use logs from the woods to simulate a jack.
The tailor is fearful of Brody and contemplates hitting him with a tire iron or a rock. At a gas station five minutes from the safe house, the tailor makes a run for it while Brody is buying things inside. When Brody finally tracks down the tailor, he tackles him into a sharp object in the woods, causing a huge wound in the tailor's stomach.
After staunching the flow of blood, Brody gets a call from his wife. He is late to a big event with the vice president. When the tailor won't shut up, Brody breaks his neck to keep his wife from overhearing what the tailor has to say. Brody digs a shallow grave in the woods and puts the tailor in it.
With Brody AWOL from the big event, his wife is forced to step up to the podium and make a speech in his stead. She delivers a speech about the need for families to support wounded troops and gets a standing ovation. Afterward, Jess gets a ride home from Mike. Before they can resume their affair, however, Brody returns home. Jess says she wants out of their marriage if Brody keeps telling her lies.
Meanwhile, Carrie is finishing up the last bits of paperwork from her Beirut assignment. She stayed up all night finishing her detailed, 18-page report, only to find out that she hasn't been invited to the debriefing. While David does tell Carrie that she found some actionable intelligence in the Beirut apartment, he won't elaborate.
Carrie returns home, packs her things, and tells her father that she needs to move out. She needs to figure out what to do with the rest of her life, and she needs to be in her own space to do that. At her apartment, she gets dressed up to go out, then changes her mind. She pours two large glasses of wine and takes all of her pills at once to kill herself. A minute later, she changes her mind and forces herself to throw up the pills.
It's a good thing she does. Saul shows up at her doorstep and says he needs to show her something, a video that Estes hasn't even seen yet. It's the video of Brody, and it proves that she was right all along. Vindicated and exhausted, Carrie cries.
