Want to take a page from Hugh Jackman's workout regimen? The chiseled star of "The Wolverine" sat down for an "Oprah's Next Chapter" interview and revealed his secret recipe for abs that are worthy of a Marvel movie character.
But not before Oprah felt their rock-hard awesomeness. When she taped the episode back in May, the talk-show queen even posted a pic on her Instagram account to verify things: "Having lunch convo with @HughJackman..omg those abs are Real! #nextchapter."
Because lest you think the hunky star of the "X-Men" movie series is photoshopped on all of those magazine covers (he's not!), Jackman's wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, says her husband's ripped bod is the result of discipline, hard work, and extreme eating habits.
"No one is more disciplined," Furness told Oprah. "He works really hard at it and it's no fun for the family. We can never go out to eat. It's like he's always having another cow or a chicken or a broccoli." (More on that in a minute.)
To prepare for his sixth role as Wolverine in the movie series, the Aussie actor -- who can bench press 300 pounds and has leg pressed a whopping 1,000 pounds -- amped up his routine big time, and he told Oprah he actually likes to work out.
"More and more I like it," he said. "I've liked it more in the last year. I have a trainer whose philosophy is 'I'm not gonna kill you every time. I'm going to make it so you want to do it.' You know, sometimes you train so hard that you just dread going. I haven't trained like that. And, actually, the results have been better … I'm someone who likes routine and discipline. I kind of revel when I've got a structure."
The 44-year-old actor's structured routine includes training nearly three hours a day (two hours in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon) and consuming up to 6,000 carefully selected calories a day. He got the secret formula from a good source, tracking a fellow muscular movie star down to get the skinny on how to build more lean muscle mass.
"I literally rang Dwayne Johnson, 'The Rock,' and said 'I've seen you in some movies. What's going on? What do I do?'" Jackman revealed. "He went through the diet, and it was 6,000 calories, eating every two hours … It would look like two chicken breasts, steamed broccoli, beans, and maybe some carbs. I even do a thing called water dehydration."
Serious business. Still, Jackman had to joke when Oprah asked him if there were any high-tech enhancements made to his physique for his latest Wolverine role.
"No, I wish," he said. "In fact, when I look back, why didn't I just eat pizza, drink beer, and ask for photoshopping? Surely you can do that!"
