James Spader Is Not Returning to The Office Next Season

First Steve Carell, now James Spader: The Office is losing its head honchos.

Spader, who joined the NBC comedy full-time this season, has decided not to return for the ninth season, Variety reports.

NBC Developing The Office Spin-Off About Dwight Schrute

The 52-year-old actor, who last starred in Boston Legal, first appeared on the series in the Season 7 finale as the eccentric Robert California, a possible replacement for the departing regional manager Michael Scott (Carell). Upon Spader's return as a series regular in Season 8, Robert had not only gotten hired, but he had worked his way up over the summer to the CEO position at Sabre, the company that owns Dunder Mifflin, replacing Kathy Bates' Jo Bennett.

"James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television," executive producer Paul Lieberstein told the trade. "He's been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I'm grateful for that."

Ratings have been down this season, hitting a series low of 4.28 million viewers on Feb. 16. Carell's final episode drew 8.42 million viewers.

Pilot Season: Fox Picks Up OB/GYN Comedy Starring Mindy Kaling

Spader may not be the only Office castmember leaving the series. Should Mindy Kaling's Fox pilot about a Bridget Jones-type OBGYN get picked up to series, Kelly Kapoor could be saying farewell, too. And NBC is reportedly mulling the idea of a Dwight Schrute-centric spin-off starring Rainn Wilson.

Are you happy about Spader's exit? Or will you miss Robert California?

I still like that show. They just feel lost right now, as if theyre really worried theyre going to be cancelled. Dont worry about, just be funny.

The Office has jumped the shark -- no disrespect to Mr. Spader intended. The plot lines are shaky -- the characters are going no-where fast. There are no real laughs ------

Well, it seems like they just need to take the script and....shove it up their butts!

Spader does not fit in. He is indeed a great actor and I really like him. For this role, Carell has done so well that it is hard to find someone so goofy and a complete idiot like Carell.

The show is definitely not the same without Steve Carrell, but I'm wondering why the article refers to Spader as being "full-time" on The Office. He's in about once every four episodes it seems...

I don't miss Carrell at all, his antics just really got too old too fast, eh.

I still love this show, I tune in or DVR it every week. But looks like it's coming to an end.

The show is dying. Shows need to go off on a high note instead of bleeding slowly to death and torturing the fans.

Man, the years have not been kind to Spader.

I miss seeing him in Boston Legal, what a group of winners. Wish I could find it in reruns!

You can get every season from your library for free. It's great - the whole season in one set and no commercials! Boston Legal was one of the best tv shows ever made.

I'd give you 30 plus's if I could. This is the entire reason, but people just don't see it

I have loved, get that loved James Spader in everything I have ever seen him in .... In The Office, not so much. It looks like he doesn't even like it.

Stick a fork in that show, it's done. I'll put the over/under on episodes airing before cancellation of the Dwight spin-off at 1 and 1/2.

There really is not point in keeping the show on the air. Steve Carrell made the show what it was, and there is no getting that back.

I hope they replace him with someone who can act. His attempt at humor really falls short.

I have tried so hard to find humor in this show, I just can't do it. I just seems so phony, right from the start and untill it ends.
