Joining an already crowded talent competition slate, The Next will attempt to stand out from the rest when it premieres on Thursday, Aug. 16.
With mentors Joe Jonas, Gloria Estefan, John Rich and Nelly on its roster, the new CW series integrates each global superstar into the contestants’ everyday lives, while attempting to help train them for a hometown showdown. By the end of each episode, one contestant from the respective city will be selected to compete in the live rounds in Hollywood, beginning in September.
“I literally will show up wherever my contestant is either working or they live,” Jonas explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve had to babysit with them, I’ve had college basketball players. Gloria worked at a restaurant, she was on a tractor -- the most bizarre situations.”
“Our show, you really do the behind-the-scenes stuff,” he adds. “You don’t really get that in the other shows. You only get to see their two minutes every week on stage and sing, and then they get judged, and then they go and work on it by themselves.”
The mentors hit Orlando on Thursday’s premiere, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
In the video above, Jonas describes the on-set shenanigans as “like a locker room” and jokes about Estefan’s guy-friendly sense of humor.
