Kelly Monaco and Steve Burton Talk About Their 'General Hospital' Wedding

The Popular Soap Stars Knock Down Luke and Laura Comparisons

Daytime soap operas may seem like a relic of the past with the pending finales of "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" right around the corner. But one institution in the genre is holding strong and even planning a big blockbuster wedding. Two of "General Hospital's" most beloved stars are getting married.

Jason Morgan and Samantha McCall Have an Unconventional Wedding

In a week-long TV event starting Monday, September 19 and culminating on Friday, September 23, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Samantha McCall (Kelly Monaco) will finally get hitched. And while the show does not draw the viewers that it did in the days when Luke and Laura walked down the aisle, this wedding is a big deal for "GH" viewers.

Fans of the show, and the unconventional couple, will not be surprised to learn that they opt out of the traditional wedding after a last minute case of cold feet. But they do tie the knot. In a recent exclusive interview Burton discussed the TV couple's route to the alter, "Quite a journey it has been. It's been a long road for Jason and Sam. And not really until recently did Jason ever plan on getting married or really think about it."

    Monaco added, "Nor did Sam."

"Nor did Sam," continued Burton. "So it was a big step for Jason to say, 'Hey you know what? I want to commit the rest of my life to you.' And I think that really scared Sam." Burton explained that Sam, however, did not run away, and so they began planning a very traditional day, "every woman's dream wedding - family, dress, church, the whole nine yards."

But Monaco revealed, "It almost scared Sam away." And so the couple hopped on Jason's bike to clear their heads and went for a ride. They ended up at a Chinese restaurant where Monaco said, "Little did we know there was a minister there that owned the restaurant. And the opportunity came up and we said, 'Yeah, let's do this.'"

So the couple skipped the walk down the aisle in the poofy white dress and got hitched in a "Chinese chop shop" as Monaco called it. Burton said, "It seemed right for our characters at the time and we do get married."

Fans Will See Kelly Monaco in the Big Wedding Gown

But have no fear for those fans that want to see Monaco dressed in the gown and enjoy the party with family and friends. Monaco divulged what led up to the fateful bike ride. "Sam, of course, was trying on her dress and going out on her balcony to reflect and everything. And Jason shows up and she has that moment and he sees her in the dress."

She continued, "She was really overwhelmed and he was like, 'I got an idea. Let's just get out of here for a second.' They were just going to go just to go for a ride and come back and get the dress on and do the whole thing… So she's in jeans and a t-shirt [at the] marriage. And then we go back to the wedding to where everyone's waiting all dressed up. We got to be in comfortable clothes for the 15-hour day. It was perfect."

Monaco and Burton Refute Comparisons to Luke and Laura

And while the big wedding may cause some fans to draw parallels to the iconic "General Hospital" Luke and Laura nuptials of the '80s, Monaca and Burton feel out of their league when compared to that event. Burton stated, "That was a huge deal. It was one of the most watched shows in the world at the time… Luke and Laura - they're idols. They're legends. I'm not even going to put myself in that category."

Monaco interjected, "It's like 'Here's the new Elvis.' There's only one Elvis."

So even though the wedding may not go down in television history like their predecessors, the actors are pleased with the whole storyline. Burton remarked, "We were very pleasantly surprised of how it came out. I'm looking forward to watching it. It's going to be a good week."
