Every now and again, a movie clip or story about former TV star Kirk Cameron pops up. Recently, there's been a ton of buzz about his latest appearance on "Piers Morgan," which got '80s TV fans wondering, "What has the former star been up to since his 'Growing Pains' days?" and "What is up with all this propaganda that he seems to be promoting?"
Appearance on Piers Morgan
Last week Kirk Cameron made an appearance on "Piers Morgan" where he made some inflammatory remarks regarding homosexuality; he called homosexuality "unnatural" and that he believes that marriage between one man and one woman was created in the Garden of Eden.
Doesn't Cameron seem to be ignoring the fact that polygamy was a normal practice in the Old Testament? If marriage was invented in the Garden of Eden, ie. the Old Testament, why ignore and discount the other presentations of marriage in the Bible? Even that bit of logic aside, it doesn't soften his homophobic remarks, and Cameron came across as a very hardline fundamentalist.
Movie Release Coming SoonCameron has made a documentary called "Monumental," which is being released at the end of this month. The trailer features plenty of shots with the actor staring intensely at different historical monuments with his voice over claiming that America needs to "go back" to the original vision of the country or we will be facing collapse. It's funny that Cameron states that American history has been rewritten, because many historians will tell you that our country's forbears were not necessarily "Christian" in the sense that we think of Christianity today. Many were Deists and even atheist.
The Christian Circuit: Ministry Projects and TalksOne of the projects Cameron works on is called Camp Firefly, which offers an all-expense paid vacation for families with terminally-ill children. The video is truly touching; it left me blubbering over my keyboard. In addition to the camp, the actor is also involved in various Christian TV projects, most of which are incredibly didactic.
Kirk Cameron is living the American Dream, free to be married to his wife and share his values with his children. If it were up to him, he would deny this right to people of other sexual orientations. Whether we agree with him or not, it's his right to believe what he chooses - but it's up to us to make sure he doesn't silence others.
