Season 5 of "Sons of Anarchy" has come to an end in its typical dramatic fashion. But in a recent conference call interview, series creator Kurt Sutter, gave a sneak peek at what's ahead for some of the fan favorites.
Jimmy Smits as Neron "Nero" Padilla
While Sutter would love to see Jimmy Smits return, he explained that as of now, his future is open-ended while they wait to hear about the actor's availability. Sutter acknowledged, "His sort of Latino past and that energy, mixing it into our world is really fascinating for me. I love the relationship that is going on with he and Gemma. There's enough emotional weight on the table, there's enough relationship weight on the table for us to continue that storyline."Donal Logue as Lee Toric
This season, Donal Logue joined the cast as Lee Toric. Sutter confirmed that the actor will return for more episodes next year. He teased, "That character will be a big character next season and probably the most dangerous threat that the club has ever had. Just in terms of a law enforcement guy with law enforcement weight, law enforcement credentials, or connections. And yet, because he is retired, does not have perhaps the legal handcuffs or morality hurdles that maybe some of our other law enforcement members have had."
Charlie Hunnam as Jackson 'Jax' Teller
With Opie's death mid-season, Sutter intended to accelerate Jax's emotional journey, giving him the space to realize that he was a more successful outlaw than family man. But fans shouldn't jump to the conclusion that that is Jax's ultimate path. As Sutter explained, "In this moment at the end, there is a sense of, 'I'm completely successful on the one hand, and yet I've completely failed at this other thing. Maybe I'm just supposed to be doing the thing that I'm good at.'"Drea de Matteo as Wendy Case
Whether or not Drea de Matteo will return for another season will have to be left to fate. The "Sopranos" star has signed on to shoot a backdoor pilot for Lifetime called "Stalkers." If it goes to series, she might not be able to make appearances on "SOA." Sutter said he'd welcome her return: "I definitely have more story I want to tell there, and again, it's really her availability."Kurt Sutter as Big Otto Delaney
This season, Sutter made a bold choice when he had the character he plays bite off his own tongue. While it served a creative purpose, there was another benefit for the executive producer, who acknowledged, "It was my way of writing myself out of having to learn dialogue. If Otto comes back, it will just be grunts, and me scribbling on paper."
" Sons of Anarchy " will return with all new episodes in 2013.
