And yet, James Remar (Harry Morgan) and Jennifer Carpenter (Deb Morgan) have both appeared on the fluffy little kids show "Pound Puppies." It's weird to think of hardened cops providing the voices of cuddly cartoon characters, but these "Dexter" stars have both appeared on "Pound Puppies."
Remar played Sarge in the 2011 "Pound Puppies" episode "The K9 Kid." Sarge was a German Shepherd who belonged to a police officer.
Carpenter's character was Pepper, a little grey puppy who first appeared in the same episode as Remar's character. Pepper wants to be a police dog, and Sarge believed that Pepper would have what it takes to be a great one. It was an interesting parallel to their roles on "Dexter."
Carpenter reprised her role as Pepper for two more episodes: "I Heard the Barks on Christmas Eve" and "It's Elementary, My Dear Pub Club."
Remar and Carpenter aren't the only actors with a gritty reputation to appear on this soft and cuddly series. Michael Rapaport plays a regular character on the show, Squirt. Rapaport is arguably best known for his roles as mobster Paul Moretti on "The Mob Doctor" and Murray Babitch in "Cop Land."
Likewise, acclaimed actor M. Emmet Walsh appeared on "Pound Puppies" for more than 30 episodes as Olaf. Best known for playing crooked cops and hardened criminals, Walsh's character on "Pound Puppies" was decidedly more sweet. You might know Walsh as the private investigator Loren Visser in the classic film "Blood Simple."
Another "Pound Puppies" star with a reputation for gritty work, J.K. Simmons played the roles of Mr. Rock and Lt. Withers on the animated series. Simmons is best known to TV fans as Assistant Chief Will Pope on "The Closer." He also played Dr. Emil Skoda on "Law & Order: SVU" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
So, as funny as it might seem, gritty actors from "Dexter" and other TV shows have all played roles on one of the most saccharine, cheesy kids shows of all time. Who would have guessed? Here's hoping the next season of "Pound Puppies" features some appearances from other "Dexter" stars like C.S. Lee or even Michael C. Hall.
