Like a sub that dives too deep, the crew of the U.S.S. Colorado feels pressure on all sides during the latest episode of "Last Resort." In "Eight Bells," tempers flare on the island of Sainte Marina as XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) searches for three missing crewman. The submariners from the Colorado don't blend well with the locals, which leads to some explosive confrontations.
Meanwhile, Captain Chaplin (Andre Braugher) receives a warning from White House Senior Adviser Amanda Straugh about the blockade. In a few hours, Straugh advises, the Colorado and its crew will be effectively cut off from the world. When Chaplin dismisses her suggestion of unconditional surrender, Straugh says that the remains of Chaplin's son will not be buried until this conflict is resolved.
Chaplin approaches Master Chief Joseph Prosser (Robert Patrick) to help find the missing crew members. With the promise of being able to testify at Chaplin's court martial, Prosser agrees but has a tense encounter with Lt. Grace Shepard (Daisy Betts) aboard ship.
Sam appeals to Sophie Girad (Camille de Pazzis) for help. Sophie is planning to leave the island, but she accompanies Chaplin on a visit to Julian Serrat (Sahr Ngaujah). Because the blockade affects his business, Serrat agrees to produce the three crewman if Chaplin can retrieve his merchandise.
On the homefront, Kylie Sinclair has a clandestine meeting with Admiral Arthur Shepard in a parking garage. Shepard implores Sinclair, the creator of the Perseus cloaking device, to do the right thing and help uncover the truth about the missile fire order that came through the old Antarctic network.
Kylie's father shows up, first at her boyfriend Robert's office and then their apartment. When the hard drive with the schematics that Kylie kept in the safe goes missing, her dad appears sympathetic, but he may know more about the theft than he's letting on.
Speaking of the Perseus, the new technology is a dangerous power drain on the Colorado. With circuits failing, Capt. Chaplin orders the crew to do things the old-fashioned way and switch to silent running. The crew uses evasive maneuvers to dodge depth charges and return with Serrat's cargo.
A dropped flashlight allows the destroyers to lock onto the Colorado, however. With less than 30 minutes to return to Sainte Marina, Chaplin directs the submarine into a dangerous canyon. Thanks to expert guidance from Sophie, the Colorado makes it back safely to the island, but not in time to prevent Serrat from executing one of his hostages.
"Eight Bells" also shows the growing attraction between Sophie and Sam. The XO is devoted to his wife, though, and so far nothing inappropriate has happened with Sophie. But the first season is far from over.
