'MasterChef' recap: Chefs must face the creatures of the sea

The latest episode of "MasterChef" had a distinctively wet theme. Both the mystery box challenge and the elimination test involved creatures of the sea. Obviously, that proved to be much harder for some chefs than others. With the tension and rivalries between the cooks heating up, this episode ended up being one of the most intense so far. When all was said and done, only eight chefs were left standing. Here is a recap of the latest episode of "MasterChef."

    The mystery box challenge

In one of the stranger mystery box challenges ever, the cooks lift their boxes to find one single ingredient. That ingredient is a sea urchin, something that scares the chefs in a way we've never seen. In an effort to calm everyone down, Gordon demonstrates how to humanely kill the sea urchin in order to take out the key edible parts, which are known as "uni." After that, the clock starts ticking and the chefs must cook.

After watching the chefs cook throughout the challenge, the judges end up choosing the three best dishes. For the first time, Becky isn't among that group. Felix is rewarded for her sea urchin risotto and receives high marks for presentation. Josh's sea urchin pasta receives praise from Joe because of the instincts he used. The third dish belongs to Stacey, whose unique sea urchin sushi roll impresses all three judges. The judges declare Felix the winner, giving her a huge advantage in the next round.

    The elimination test

The elimination test is all about fish. There are nine different types of fish on the board, and Felix gets to choose who is cooking what. She surprises the judges by choosing halibut for herself, and then plays the strategy game. She views Becky and Frank as her biggest competition and gives them the rockfish and catfish respectively. Meanwhile, she gives the two easy fish to Christine and Tali. Like many contestants, she also doesn't respect Monti and decides to give her John Dory.

As it turns out, things couldn't have gone worse for Felix. Her halibut draws criticism from all three judges. Meanwhile, the three contestants she wanted out of the competition all end up impressing. The two best dishes belong to Monti and Frank, and they are named captains in the next round. Meanwhile, Becky's rockfish gets a fair amount of praise. On the flipside, both Tali and Christine end up in the bottom three along with David. Since this was her first disappointing effort, Christine is saved. Gordon gives stern words to both Tali and David, but Tali is the only one to end up getting sent home. While he thinks of himself as a genius, the judges apparently got tired of the constant letdowns.
