Before Horatia Caine came to Miami-Dade Police Department, he was a detective for the New York City Police Department. His father killed his mother. Caine later killed his father for the murder of his mother.He later was stabbed by a murderer who killed the parents of children who were locked in a closet. He used the blood from the scene to frame the murderer, Walter Resden, for his girlfriend, Rachel.
While Caine's unorthodox methods have lead to convictions, he has had to fire Ryan Wolfe due to putting himself in compromised himself during an investigation. This was after Wolfe replaced Tim Speedle. Speedle was killed during a shootout because of poor weapon maintenance on his part.
This has lead Caine to being persistent and insistent his team perform daily maintenance on their guns to prevent this from happening again to any member of his team.
Horatio Caine is a lieutenant with the Miami-Dade Police Crime Lab because he is a commissioned police officer. He became head of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab after went on Megan Donner maternity leave. She never returned.
He found out later he had a son name Kyle Harmon. Kyle Harmon was conceived while Horatio was undercover in a case while as a New York detective. Kyle was incarcerated for kidnapping. Kyle worked as an assistant for Tara Price the Medical Examiner in the crime lab. He now serves in the military and this makes Horatio proud of him.
Julie Eberlie is Kyle's mother. She came back in Horatio's life when she was a suspect in a case in Miami. However, her name has came up again as Julia Winston. She is later goes to rehab for her drug addiction and other problems.
Lt. Caine has worked with Detective Mac Taylor twice on cases that crossed both of their jurisdictions. He has also worked with the Las Vegas team on one occasion where a case overlapped the Miami, New York and Las Vegas Jurisdictions to solve a crime.
Caine will do anything necessary, in some cases, to serve justice. He has beaten men who have harmed women. While viewers haven't seen him do this, it is implied do to closing of blinds and closing of doors for no one to see.
He was married to Eric Delko's sister, Marisol Delko. Marisol had cancer and Horatio married her. She was shot and later died. Horatio and Erik went to Brazil to find and kill Marisol's shooter. Horatio visits Marisol's grave on her birthday.
One characteristic of Horatio Caine none of the other "CSI" supervisor has is his sunglasses. He always has a sideways stance when putting on the sunglasses after a conversation with a member of his team on scene at a case.
Lt. Caine also has a brother and a niece. His brother was killed and Horatio has taken on financial responsibility for his niece and her mother, who was his brother's mistress.
