Mel Gibson Invited to Whitney Houston's Funeral

Mel Gibson won't be at Whitney Houston's star-studded funeral service in Newark, NJ on Saturday -- but the late star's family extended an invitation to the actor, director and recovering alcoholic, a source confirms to Us Weekly.

Although Gibson, 56, is unable to attend the somber affair due to prior commitments, the controversial Braveheart star once attempted to help Houston, 48 when she died in Beverly Hills last Saturday, with her own substance abuse problems, the source confirms.

(TMZ was first to report the story, adding that Houston's family was "extremely appreciative" of the time he spent trying to help several years ago.)

"Alcoholism is something that runs in my family. It's something that's close to me," Gibson has said.

"Addiction is a deadly disease," another source tells Us of Houston's own battle. The star, who had been frank about her use of cocaine, marijuana, pills and alcohol, was partying hard in Hollywood the nights leading up to her Feb. 11 death.  "Drugs and alcohol were her demons," the source says.

Kevin Costner, Alicia Keys, Clive Davis, Aretha Franklin, Tyler Perry, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Kim Burrell, Rickey Minor, Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Winans and Cece Winans will be among the mourners at Houston's funeral service at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ on Saturday.

The Grammy-winning singer will be laid to rest on Sunday at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, NJ -- in a plot adjacent to her father, John Russell Houston, who died in 2003

Who taught these writers how to write? That second sentence is not only a run on sentence, but very convoluted. Sheesh.

Agreed and that second sentence didn't make sense. I got what they were trying to say, but it was weird.

This isn't the first time Mel Gibson came to help a celebrity's drug problem. Most notably was the intervention he put together for Courtney Love, who was way off the deep end. He's very low key and private about his work too. So it's no surprise he tried to help Whitney. Mel Gibson will always be one class act. People should forgive him.

It's still hard to believe that Whitney has passed. I remember watching the "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" video when I was a kid and being awestruck at how fabulous she was. I love this woman and it's nice to see how many people, in this case here being celebs, loved and admired her.

I wonder if he'll make any N word jokes. I'm sure he's got some great ones.

Reality, thank you for pointing that out, although alot of people have no idea what you mean. Have you noticed that people say, him and I or her and I, never say excuse me, thank you, or may I? (for those who don't know, proper english says that the correct way to say these things are: He and I, she and I, and usually the "stars" in Hollywood are the ones who use impropper English the most). I know they believe they know more than the people who know the correct way to speak, but, being on the TV, Internet, and in the public, having young people imitate them, I wish they would learn how to speak the correct way. I am glad that someone else, (Reality's comment), noticed that.

The party line is that addiction is a "disease" when in fact it isn't. This disease tag makes it more socially acceptable. However, if a person never drinks or takes drugs, they will never develop an addiction. It boils down to brain chemistry. Some people's brains are more susceptible to the addictive properties of certain substances. That's it in a nutshell. If people would never touch the stuff, guess what? No addictions. God wants us to treat our bodies as temples because He owns us body and soul since Jesus paid a steep price for each person's salvation. Therefore, we are to keep our bodies healthy and refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages and doing drugs. If we followed His precepts, we'd all avoid a lot of heartache and trouble.
