Mitt Romney Misquotes 'Seinfeld' in Debate (Video)

In a debate gaffe that revealed serious questions about Mitt Romney's ability to recite old sitcom dialogue, the Republican presidential contender misremembered a line from "Seinfeld" Wednesday -- and who had said it.

    But hey, he tried.

When Romney pledged to "restore America's promise" at the start of the Arizona debate, he was interrupted by applause. He laughed and said, "As George Costanza would say, 'When they're applauding, stop.'"

Two problems, as Buzzfeed.com notes: He had the quote wrong, and it wasn't uttered by George Costanza.

In fact, it was Jerry Seinfeld who said to George (in the season nine episode "The Burning"), "Showmanship, George. When you hit that high note, you say goodnight and walk off."

George Costanza himself -- Emmy-nominated actor Jason Alexander -- responded to the Romney misquote via Twitter.

"Thrilled Gov. Romney enjoys my old character. I enjoyed the character he used 2 b 2. If he'd embrace that again, he'd b a great candidate," Alexander tweeted.

Check out video clips below, first of Romney's "Seinfeld" misquote, and then one of George Costanza heeding Jerry's showmanship advice:

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

My problem relates to how he made the same mistake a few months earlier. At least he is consistent in his (mis)belief that it's a George line. One of the last examples of his resolute stances.

He was paraphrasing, clearly. Now, let's see if he can properly quote Family Guy.

that just proves what a #$%$ romney is!!!--not for the misquote, but because he actually tried to quote anything from that has been, nothing of a show!!!---listen people,I lvie in MA,he used to be our gov,and if you are stupid enough to elect him president, then you had better get ready to move to mexico, cuz all he is gonna do is make the richer even richer, and do his best to kill the poor and minorities---just look up his record when he was in charge of our state---the guy is trouble,BIG trouble, unless of course you are a multi millionaire, then you should be ok,but you had better have more than just ONE million, cuz THEY dont consider ONE million being part of their club these days, anything less that multi 7 figures, and you are screwed!

Uh Oh, now I have second thoughts about the Mittster. Anyone that can't get their "Seinfeld" quotes right I just can't trust. It's like the Soup Nazi might say: "No vote for you!"

Being a Republican this may end his career when the liberal media gets do with him. Have you notice the mostly free pass our current VP gets for his gaffs? If he was a Republican his career would have ended years ago.

Uncle Mitty has never watched Seinfeld, mormons are only allowed to watch old Disney cartoons, Lawerence Welk reruns and the byu channel. Don't you love it when these jackholes try to be hip, and fall flat on their faces, I know I do.

This is an article about television. Setting your misleading facts aside, Obama has not misquoted Seinfeld multiple times.

Does anyone really think this will affect someone's vote? Of course not, it is an article to elicit a snicker from the audience. So grow a sense of humor, snicker, and move on with your life.

Duh, nice try Mitt. Why do these politicians open their mouths BEFORE getting something straight? My gosh, if you're going to quote from such a well-known show, be sure that you have the line correct before you try to use it!
