ABC's "Modern Family" seems to be the go-to place for guest star gigs. Following in the footsteps of the top-rated sitcom "Friends" nearly a decade ago, "Modern Family" has managed to sway several big name stars to stop in for a guest cameo. Or is it the big stars who are doing the swaying?
Here's a look at some big name stars set to make a guest stop on "Modern Family."
First up, according to TV Line, Emmy and Tony winner Ellen Barkin is slated to guest star on the show later this season as Vera, a "very tough, legendary real estate broker who becomes Phil's main nemesis."
But according to Broadway.com, Barkin isn't the only former Broadway star headed for "Modern Family."
Tony nominee Bobby Cannavale will also guest star on the show in early 2012. Cannavale, who is best known for his roles on "Third Watch" and "Will & Grace," will guest star as Louis, the former partner of Cam's alter ego, Fizbo the Clown.
Entertainment Weekly recently reported that actor Greg Kinnear has signed on to play Phil Dunphy's new business partner, Tad, on the show. Kinnear's character is described as "successful and athletic." (Don't you hate people like that?) Incidentally, Kinnear also did the early '90's obligatory "Friends" cameo, when he played the ex of Ross' girlfriend.
Past "Modern Family" guest stars have included Matt Dillon, Nathan Lane, James Marsden, Shelley Long, Edward Norton and Benjamin Bratt, who is set to reprise his role as Gloria's ex-husband and Manny's biological father in Season 3.But one big-name star who wants to get on the show still hasn't landed that coveted cameo role.
On an appearance on "Live With Regis and Kelly," "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson said that Grammy-winning singer Lady Gaga has expressed interest in guest-starring on the hit ABC show.
"She reached out and she wanted to do something with the show," Jesse told "Live" host Kelly Ripa. "But how do you incorporate Lady Gaga into 'Modern Family'? Like 'ding-dong' and you open the door and she's like, 'Hey!'"
Ripa suggested a dream sequence, but producers opted to incorporate a fictional Lady Gaga concert into a storyline instead. Unfortunately, there was no Gaga concert scene!
Meanwhile, Jesse Tyler Ferguson told Digital Spy that he has one dream guest casting choice for the show: "Sofia [Vergara] is a huge fan of Sophia Loren and I think that's a brilliant casting choice. So yeah, we're always putting it out there that she's welcome to come by if she wants!"
And speaking of wish lists, "Modern Family" star Roc Rodriguez has his own dream cast member.
Rodriguez, who plays Manny on the show, told Digital Spy that he would love it if producers cast Tobey Maguire in a guest starring role.
"I'm a big, big 'Spider-Man' fan," he said. "So it would be awesome to work with him."
"Modern Family" airs on Wednesday night on ABC.
