The latest episode of "Modern Family" gave fans a classic Phil story. The show is always funny when Phil is clueless about situations that are obvious to everyone else. This time, he finds himself in an increasingly awkward situation with a gay man, played by guest star Matthew Broderick. Matthew's guest appearance is just the latest of many strong cameos for this show, and his scenes with Phil highlighted another strong episode. Here is a recap of the latest episode, "Mistery Date."
Phil's new friendAlex has an academic competition out of town, and Claire has taken Luke and Manny on the trip. That leaves Phil home alone, which makes Claire a little nervous. She insists that he has things to do as opposed to just lingering around the house. Phil actually meets a fellow alum named Dave at the gym and forms an instant bond. However, he's not aware that the Dave is gay. Not only that, but it was Cam who recommended the gym to Dave.
Phil invites Dave over to watch a game and realizes that Phil is married. However, Phil continues to say and do things that make Dave believe he wants to have a fling with him. It doesn't help when Dave gets encouraging words through a phone call to Cam, who still doesn't know that he's talking about Phil.
As they watch the game, Dave inches closer to Phil. At one point, the two end up shirtless after a margarita spill. As the signs continue to mount, Dave decides to leave. He tells Phil that he's just getting out of a relationship and kisses Phil good-bye. It's only at this point that Phil realizes that Dave is gay.
Claire's trip with the kidsWhile Claire is preparing for the academic challenge with Alex, Luke and Manny are intrigued when they see some girls in the lobby heading to a bar mitzvah. Unfortunately, there are three different bar mitzvah parties. Luke likes the idea of sneaking into them, and he's having a blast. However, Manny is determined to find the girls they saw in the lobby. He rushes them out of the first two parties, and they finally find the girls in the third. However, a security guard busts them for sneaking in. Before he gets kicked out, Manny gives a sweet speech to the girl he met in the lobby. She ends up smiling and joins him in the photo booth.
Meanwhile, as Claire brags about Alex's winning ways at the competition, she is stunned to find out that Alex was eliminated early. Claire protests the results, but Alex says that she lost fair and square. She says that her mom gets too much out of Alex's wins, and Claire realizes that that might be true. The two make peace and decide to take a ride on a nearby water slide.
Jay's emotional issuesCam and Mitchell have come up with a gift for Jay and Gloria's nursery, but they need to get them out of the house in order to set it up. That leads to Mitchell getting Jay out of the house, which he does by accompanying him to a baby store. When he's there, Mitchell starts to think something is going on with his dad. He even sees Jay talking to a doctor in the store, and he assumes the man is a therapist. Things get weirder when he sees him hug a man in a bunny costume. He finally decides to try and talk to Jay about it but gets teased in return.
Eventually, Jay admits that he is upset about losing his home office. Mitchell explains that it's simply an adjustment, and that the new baby will make him feel better. Meanwhile, everyone finds out that Cam's gift was an elaborate wall painting in the nursery, depicting the family as almost god-like.
