"Modern Family" cliffhangers and Season 3 sneak peeks have revealed a lot about future episodes. Viewers know what to expect, but what they need are a few unexpected plot twists? They already know Cam and Mitchell want to adopt a son. Little Lily will return to the show a walking, talking toddler with a whole new face. Jay will come back a little short on confidence. (Blame it on Botox) Claire will seek work outside of her housewife duties and Haley is headed for high school.
Of course the "Modern Family" writers already do a fine job of spinning crazy, funny family tales. They've got lots of great plots in the works for Season 3. They don't need any suggestions, but just in case they do, here are a few fresh ideas they might have overlooked.
How about a pregnant Gloria?
The guys love sexy Gloria even if her English leaves a lot to the imagination. She is indeed a glorious specimen of a woman, but would men still love her with a big baby bump. Nothing would stop Jay from loving his beautiful wife, although he's not likely to care for parenting at this senior stage in life. How old is he? Who knows, but he's got grown kids and teenage grandchildren. That makes him too old for a newborn. If he and his young bride have a baby, Jay would likely be 90 or pretty close to it by the time his little one graduated from high school.
Viewers would love a leaner, meaner Jay
Gloria adores her husband, even if he is crotchety and snippy and a little bit pudgy around the middle. (He's a lot like Al Bundy) She says she loves him just the way he is, but she's his wife. Doesn't she have to say things like that? Gloria would love Jay even more if he went on a serious self improvement kick.
If he lost a few belly pounds he might gain a lot of energy for longer, later nights. He could do meditation each morning and become very positive... very Zen-like. If Jay used one of those products that gradually darkens gray hair, he might even end with a younger look than son-in-law, Phil. Gloria would really love that.
What if Haley and Alex became high school bffs
The Brady Bunch and Partridge Family kids loved each other. They played together and even sang songs together, but that was a few decades ago. TV kids just don't get along that way any more. Still wouldn't it be great if Haley and Alex had a sister/friendship like those singing siblings from the seventies? They could get musical while riding to school each day. They could eat lunch together at the cool kid's table and double date if Haley ever found a boyfriend. These things will never happen of course, but wouldn't it be sweet if they did?
What about a wedding for Mitchell and Cameron?
They're committed and they're certainly in love. They have an adopted child and they are already sharing a home. Why aren't those two guys married? Wouldn't it be sweet to see America's funniest Gay couple exchange vows?
The wedding would be fabulous indeed. Claire could plan the festivities and she might even let Gloria help. Mother Tucker (Celia Weston) could fly in from her Missouri farm and DeDe Pritchett (Shelley Long) could make another appearance. Cam and Mitchell could invite their friends, Pepper (Nathan Lane) and Longines (Kevin Daniels) and the rest of their "homies." It would be the grandest gay wedding since.... well since those two lady doctors tied the knot one Thursday night last spring.
