The August 8 episode of "Project Runway" is set to be one of Season 12's most memorable. In addition to a ton of backstage drama, the episode welcomes "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson as the guest judge, and he will deliver the challenge to the contestants himself.
Ferguson is the co-founder of Tie the Knot, an advocacy organization that promotes marriage equality. The designers were tasked with creating bow tie-inspired looks. In a phone interview earlier this week, Ferguson opened up about his love of "Project Runway," bow ties, and TV-inspired fashion trends.
Bow ties are in!
TV fans have likely noticed in recent years that more and more iconic characters rock bow ties. Notable bow tie-wearing TV characters include Matt Smith's Doctor on "Doctor Who" and "Glee" character Blaine Anderson. When asked whether TV was partially responsible for the resurgence of the bow tie, Ferguson said that both TV and the fashion world deserve credit.
"I certainly became aware of using bow ties in an everyday way when I was lucky enough to be on 'Modern Family' and having to go to these award shows. And, you know, you're looking for a fun way to spruce up a tux. So I certainly started embracing a more wild necktie choice when sort of having to go to the events. But, you know, I certainly think shows like 'Sex and the City' and 'Glee' and 'The OC' certainly push the envelope when it comes to fashion," he explained.
"And I certainly wear a lot of bow ties on 'Modern Family,' as well. And it feels very classical, but I think when you see an iconic character wearing it, it suddenly feels a little more revolutionary," he added.
Ferguson is working with a former "Runway" finalist
As a longtime fan of "Project Runway," Ferguson was excited to share the news that Tie the Knot has partnered with former "Runway" contestant and Season 11 runner-up Patricia Michaels.
"We just designed a bow tie that we're going to take to New Mexico with us because there's a marriage-equality buildup there they have on the table. And we're going to try and bring some attention around it," he explained.
"So we got Patricia from last season's 'Project Runway' to design a bow tie for us since she is also from New Mexico. And she came up with something incredibly beautiful, and I can't wait to unveil it in a few weeks. We had a great time with her, and we really can't wait to show everyone what she came up with," Ferguson said, adding that the design will debut in September.
One of his favorite bow ties has a "Project Runway" connection
When asked about the bow ties he likes best, Ferguson revealed that one of his favorites came from the hands of a former "Project Runway" contestant. The bow tie was a gift from none other than Season 9's third place finisher Viktor Luna!
"Viktor Luna has become a friend of mine. And he wore a feathered bow tie, and I adored it. So when I met him for the first time, I told him about that bow tie that I was obsessed with. And about three weeks later, one arrived in my mailbox. It's sort of [a] beautiful green, feathered bow tie. I wore it to the People's Choice Awards a few years ago," Ferguson said.
"Project Runway" airs Thursdays at 9 PM on Lifetime.
