Jason Collins, who became the first currently active NBA player to come out as gay on Monday, continued to cause waves on the internet and media throughout the day, with ESPN writer Chris Broussard opining that Collins is living in "open rebellion of God and Jesus Christ," and ABC News personality George Stephanopoulos landing an interview with the former Washington Wizards center.
Broussard, a senior writer for ESPN the Magazine, appeared on ESPN's "Outside the Lines" Monday and opined that Collins can't be a Christian because of his homosexuality.
"Personally, I don't believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle, or an openly premarital sex between heterosexuals ... if you're openly living that kind of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that that's a sin. And if you're openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be -- not just homosexuality, [but] adultery, fornication, premarital sex, whatever it may be -- I believe that's walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ," Broussard offered. "So I would not characterize that person as a Christian, because I don't think the Bible would characterize him as a Christian."
Broussard's comments drew a fair amount of response from Twitter, much of it negative.
"@Chris_Broussard thinks he speaks for God. Uh no, Chris - your bigotry is all yours," wrote one Twitizen.
"'I used to be an analyst on ESPN. Do you have any change?' - homophobe Chris Broussard in the very near future," another wisecracked.
However, Broussard did have his supporters as well as his detractors.
"So you ask @Chris_Broussard for his thoughts and you're attacking him cause you disagree with them? And he's the intolerant one?" wrote one Broussard advocate.
"ESPN Chris Broussard takes a Biblical stand and speaks truth. Love the sinner, but can't love the sin!" another pro-Broussard partisan chimed in.
ESPN has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment on Broussard's statement.
While Collins -- who came out to Sports Illustrated op-ed -- might have received a chilly reception on ESPN's airways, he's being embraced with open arms by another member of the Disney family of companies.
Collins is being interviewed by ABC News personality George Stephanopoulos, for an interview that will air Tuesday on "Good Morning America." The exclusive interview will also be available across all ABC News platforms.
