    ‘Neighboring Sounds’ Tops Rio Film Fest Awards

    BUENOS AIRES – Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Neighboring Sounds picked up two Redentor awards for Best Fiction Film and Best Screenplay last night at the closing ceremony of the Rio International Film Fest. A winner of the FIPRESCI award at the last Rotterdam fest, the film portrays life in a middle class Recife neighbourhood and the shift of balance with the arrival of a private security firm.

    The Redentor for Best Director went to Eryk Rocha for Jards, a poetic and musical documentary essay on Brazilian musician and composer Jards Macalé, one of the most influential creators of the artistically rich 1970s in Brazil..

    The awards of the fiction slot in the Premiere Brazil also included Juliana Reis, who collected three awards for her directorial debut AE-Autoexposure. The film won Best Editing, Cinematography, and a Best Supporting Actor award for Caco Ciocler.

    Next in the prize count was director Jose Eduardo Belmonte, whose film The Gorilla got Best Actor for Otavio Müller and Best Supporting Actress for Alessandra Negrini. Leandra Leal picked Best Actress for Eden.

    The international FIPRESCI jury presented their prize for best Latin American film to Daniela Seggiaro’s Berlinale-entry Beauty from Argentina.

    This year’s Premiere Brazil selection showcased 73 new Brazilian features and shorts, of which 29 features and documentaries were shown as world premieres at the Festival do Rio.

    From Sept. 27 to Oct. 11, the Rio fest screened over 400 international and local films in more than 30 venues around the city. More than 300,000 tickets were sold.

    International guests included directors Leos Carax, Roland Joffé, Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris, IM Sang-soo, and Hideki Takeuchi; and actors Kylie Minogue, Terrence Howard, and Rodrigo Santoro.
