The rumor mill is abuzz over the possibility of Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) being written out of the CBS daytime drama "The Young and the Restless." Many fans have seen soap opera magazines featuring blaring headlines saying Scott has shot her last scene, yet the writers of the show haven't yet addressed this matter. What exactly is going on?
Many of the actors and actresses on "The Young and the Restless" have been asked to take pay cuts recently, including Eric Braeden who plays Victor Newman and Jess Walton who plays Jill Abbott. Like these two long-time stars of the show, Melody Thomas Scott has been an institution since 1979, and her husband was even a producer of the show for many years. Some publications report that Scott thought she was immune to these pay cuts, but Scott denies those allegations.
Rumors aside, the facts of the situation are that Melody Thomas Scott's contract has now expired, and her last scene for the show under her previous contract aired in early June. The producers, however, have stated that they still hope an agreement to the contract situation can be reached and that she will return soon. If she does not return as a full-time cast member, she may play a recurring role. Recasting her role is also a possibility, but producers of "The Young and the Restless" have not yet taken steps to begin the recasting process.
Whether or not Scott comes back to her role, the fact is that something needs to happen. Fans of the show are painfully aware that Nikki Newman has been in rehab for weeks now. She has been very obviously absent during a very trying time in her daughter's life, as Victoria (Amelia Heinle) just lost custody of her adopted daughter, Lucy, and her marriage is in shambles. Surprisingly, Victor Newman has stepped up to offer his support and comfort to her during this trying time. For years, however, it has always been Nikki who Victoria has sought such comfort and support from, and long-time fans aren't buying the fact that rehab is what is keeping her away from her daughter at this tumultuous time in Victoria's life.
Tune in to "The Young and the Restless" on CBS weekdays at noon E.T.
