Nikki Newman hasn't been seen around Genoa City in months. If you are a fan of the CBS daytime drama "The Young and the Restless," you may have even written off the hope of ever seeing her again. Nikki Newman (Melody Scott Thomas) is an institution on the show; she has been the matriarch of the Newman clan for several decades now.
At the beginning of the summer, Nikki headed off to rehab (again), and only fans who kept their eyes pealed to soap opera tabloid gossip knew that she might not return from her rehab stint. The show wrote her into rehab this time because her contract had expired, and Melody Scott Thomas was playing hardball by negotiating for her pay cut to be uncut. This isn't the first time this has happened; in fact it happened in 2009.
The good news for Nikki Newman fans is that Nikki will be getting out of rehab soon and will be making her return to Genoa City. Melody Scott Thomas has signed a new contract, though her new scenes are not scheduled to be filmed until October. This means that you should not expect to see her face until sometime in November.
When she returns, the big question is what she will be returning to. Her sometimes-daughter-in-law Sharon (Sharon Case) is currently in prison for murder, but her attorney Avery (Jessica Collins) thinks she can get her off. Avery is, of course, the long lost sister of Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), who Phyllis wishes had remained lost. When Nikki's son, Nick (Joshua Morrow), learned about Avery and Phyllis being sisters, Nick was peeved that Phyllis had kept this a secret. Nick and Sharon seem to be growing closer, as do Nick and Avery, but it's Nick and Phyllis who are sharing a bed. Clearly if the situation continues to evolve, Nikki will be stepping into World War III in Genoa City.
Then, of course, Nikki's daughter, Victoria (Amelia Heinle), is having her own issues with husband Billy (Billy Miller). Billy is caught up in some trouble and is trying to save his daughter, Delia, by offering her his bone marrow, all the while staying on the down-low in Genoa City. Of course, this is all Victor's (Eric Braeden) doing. As head of the Newman clan, Victor feels the need to protect his daughter and yet help to save Delia at the same time. When Victoria finds out what Victor is doing to Billy, though, Nikki may have to contend with a feud on that front, too.
The real question, which may not be a question at all given the show's history, is if Victor and Nikki will once again patch things up and tie the knot for the hundredth time. Victor is now single again, and Nikki has always had a hankering for him. The show has promised to write Nikki Newman some new and exciting story lines, too, but it seems she may have enough to contend with on her return.
