The penultimate episode of "The New Normal" boosts the stress of wedding planning and an imminent bundle of joy by adding Bryan's estranged mother to the equation. The struggle to choose a baby name prompts Shania to question the origin of her moniker. Meanwhile, Clay makes a bold decision about his relationship with Goldie.
Bryan and David disagree on the finer points of their wedding. David has his heart set on red velvet cake, but Bryan hastily dismisses it as a hipster trend suitable for a wedding officiated by Mumford & Sons. The wedding planner's advice to compromise on smaller decisions seems to help.
David implores Bryan to invite his estranged mother to the wedding. Given all the difficult people in their lives, it is hard to imagine why Colleen is unwelcome. But Rocky's refusal to socialize with her is a strong condemnation, considering that Rocky fostered a friendship with Jane.
The guys try to present a united front when Colleen arrives, but she manages to pounce on any trace of friction and turn their little rifts into huge disagreements. She criticizes everything from Bryan's clothes to his job. She admonishes them for not having a baby name ready. David wants to name the baby Julius, Julie for short, after his beloved grandpa. Bryan likes the name Thomas, but that will make the baby Tom Sawyer or Tom Collins. Despite the obvious stigma of both options, Colleen sides with David.
Bryan tries to silence his mother by inviting her to the final meeting with the wedding planner. He thinks seeing the happy, agreeable couple will stop her sniping. The scheme backfires when she criticizes the burnt almond meringue cake. She thinks burnt is a bad attribute for any cake and manages to reignite the whole red velvet disagreement.
Seeing Colleen undermine him at every opportunity reminds Bryan of their past problems. He feels like his mom is never on his side. He and David decide to randomly choose their wedding options from a hat in front of her. This scheme also backfires. Colleen is ridiculously supportive of David's triumph as his preferences win every time. She suggests letting the hat decide between their two baby names. Bryan huffily agrees despite David's protests. Julie wins and Bryan blows up.
Later, Bryan confronts his mother. She thinks he is the one who's wrong, and that he needs to let go of the past and quit judging her. Instead of meeting in the middle and acknowledging her inappropriate antics, she simply urges Bryan to grow up. He quietly accepts this, but it seems odd since they were both to blame. Perhaps Bryan realizes his mother's limitations and simply chooses to accept her instead of hoping she will change. They bond as she explains the right baby name will come to them at the right time.
The perfect name
Shania is unhappy to learn that she is Shania Twain's namesake. She wants a more mundane name until a girl named Blog enlightens her. Meanwhile, Clay is upset that Goldie wants to revert to her maiden name. He decides to make a grand gesture and re-proposes to her.
Bryan thanks David for making him invite Colleen. Her advice inspires him to let go of the tedious wedding and baby-name disagreements. As they dance in celebration, their eyes lock on the baby's framed sonogram. Suddenly, they both realize Sawyer Collins is the perfect name.
