NYPD boss' son returns to TV show after rape claim

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City police commissioner's TV host son resumed his morning show duties at "Good Day New York" on Friday, telling viewers it had been a tough couple of weeks but he was ready to get back to work after being cleared of the prospect of criminal charges of raping a woman he met for a drink.

It was Greg Kelly's first day back on the job since he took a leave of absence from the show after the allegations surfaced late last month.

Sitting next to his co-host, Rosanna Scotto, a relaxed-looking Kelly said, "It's great to be back. Folks, thank you very much."

"It's was a tough couple of weeks, obviously, for a lot of people. I'm very, very grateful for all the support I got here from my friends at Fox, support from my family, friends, those I care about."

He also thanked his viewers who "have weighed in through social media. Positive remarks. Thank you very much."

Prosecutors on Tuesday said they had not found cause to charge Kelly with a crime.

The woman told authorities that Kelly raped her in her lower Manhattan office after they went out for drinks on Oct. 8, assaulting her while she wasn't capable of consenting to sex, a person familiar with the investigation said. She told authorities she became pregnant from the encounter and had an abortion, according to a law enforcement official. Neither the person nor the law official was authorized to speak publicly, and they spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

The New York Police Department turned the matter over to the district attorney's office when the woman walked into a police station Jan. 24, citing the potential conflict of interest in investigating a son of the commissioner, Raymond Kelly.

During his brief remarks on the show Friday, Kelly did not mention the allegations.

At one point, he put his hand on Scotto's and said he was especially grateful "to this lady who sits next to me every day."

The show airs on the local Fox affiliate, WNYW-TV. A former Marine, Kelly has appeared on "Good Day New York" since 2008.

One account I read said she had repeatedly texted him and communicated with him after the alleged incident, making it harder to prosecute. The article stated the prosecutors had copies of the texts she sent, making her story harder to prove with whatever she wrote. We can second guess all we want, but I don't think we have all the facts.

so if it is date rape, it's ok? only violent rape from somebody you don't know is illegal? don't think so, rape is rape, if she was passed out drunk and he played hide the salami, it is still rape
      • Gargantuone 3 months ago
umm, she texted him afterwards to hook up again...do you really think she was asking to be 'raped' again?!?

People he is innocent, You can be sure if there was Anything they could have pinned on him they would have. Too many headhunters out for him and his dad. My question has always been, at what point do women take responsibility for agreeing to have sex. I am a woman and I have never agreed to have sex and later blame my partner for participating.

Maybe false accusers should also be put on the "registry of sex offenders." If I had one in my neighborhood, I'd want to be cautioned to never be alone with them, never be in any situation where there's any possibility of "he/she said" situation that can escalate into ruined reputation and a legal and financial nightmare.

You just convicted a man that was cleared. And because of people like you, guilty or innocent, he will serve a life sentence. This will follow him everywhere. Every time his name is mentioned, this will follow. If he were convicted and sentenced to say 10 years, the false accuser needs to be sentenced to 10 years now. Something happened that she regrets and this is her way to justify HER actions.

What are you talking about? UnknownPlanet CLEARLY states that they are talking about the accuser not the accused! Try actually paying attention to what you read.

She waits 3 1/2 months to report the rape, dosen't that seem a little strange?
      • lizzie 3 months ago
That was how long it took for her boyfriend to find out that she cheated on him.

The woman should be prosecuted for filing a false report. Crying wolf hurts real rape victims.

It's difficult to deal with when someone accuses you of a heinous crime. I was once accused of rape myself, and at the time I was a cop, but it didn't go very easy for me until some very important information came out. I happened to be in Hawaii at the time and she was in Guam. Now, I like to think of myself as talented, but that's taking things a little far. Pardon the puns.

Although I deplore people who physically and sexually abuse women and children, this story stunk from the beginning. She was too drunk to give consent, they went back to HER office, she never had sex after that with her boyfriend AND had an abortion? Well who's was it? Could have has some DNA proof, but no. Then she reports it four months later. Bull!

Some deep thinkers below says he works for Fox, he's a right-winger etc. What intelligent comments. And his daddy is Bloomberg's most important employe. And what political party was NY Governor Spitzer when he sneaked into a Washington hotel every week to meet a high-priced hooker? And didn't the madam commit suicide when the Dem authorities threatened her with prison but let off her Dem politician clients? And didn't CNN CREATE A SHOW for pervert Dem Spitzer? Give me a break. And go cram the stuff about Fox.

lesson here. Don't get plastered/lit because something bad might happen. Gee whiz how often do we hear this. I don't have much sympathy for someone that gets jacked after making a decision to get messed up. Bad decisions many times lead to bad consequences.

Maria DiTorro, although she works in the law office,is not a lawyer but rather is an aspiring actress and model. Greg Kelly, in addition to being a TV Show anchor for the last few years is also a Lt. Colonel in the USMCR, and had been a fighter pilot for 9 years in Iraq and has overt 150 carrier landings.
I will vote for the Marine Fighter Pilot before I'd vote for the "aspiring actress and model" in this case.

There are so little facts about this case that you can't judge this guy. Some women lie, and some men rape. You really have nothing to go off of other than the fact that you don't like him and you think he probably received special treatment bc of who his father is.
Women should know by now that if you are raped, you need to report it immediately. What evidence do you have weeks, months, and even years after this happened other than your word vs. his? The first thing you are taugh about rape as a woman is to, 1. do NOT shower and 2. report it immediately after it happened. I'm not demeaning rape victims, but how do you think the case will turn out if your wait so long?

He isn't saying he didn't bang her, she is the one that was jilted and now wants him to have to be dragged through the public eye. I guess if his dad had not been police chief none of this would have made the news.

I spent 4 years as a detective in a criminal investigations unit in my police department during my career. In those 4 years I was assigned 12 rapes. In 6 of those cases the women admitted to me (eventually) that they made up the allegations because they were #$%$ off at the guy. That's 50%. It's embarrassing for the suspect to be falsely accused, obviously, but it does more damage to the credibility of the accuser and to actual victims of rape.
