The son of actress Roxie Roker ("The Jeffersons") and news producer Sy Kravitz is a superstar known for his boas, furs, and platform boots, but these days he likes to keep things simple. Kravitz calls his Airstream trailer on the beach in the Bahamas a "cozy, safe womb," adding, "There's not a lot of room, but you feel really free in there because you know what your boundaries are. My life has always been about contrasts. At the end of the day, the simple way wins."
But his relationships have been anything but simple. The rock star revealed that the end of his parents' marriage deeply impacted his own relationships.
"My father loved my mother. My father just liked women," he said. But it was what his father said to him as he walked out the door that had the most profound effect on him: "My father was getting ready to leave and move out, and said, 'You'll do it, too.' It messed me up."
Sadly, when Kravitz's own marriage to "The Cosby Show" star Lisa Bonet didn't work out, it wasn't a total shock -- to anybody. Infidelity rumors swirled, and it seemed to be a case of history repeating itself.
In a 1999 episode of "Behind the Music," the couple's pal, VH1 VJ Cynthia Garrett, said, "That boy used to have me call Lisa on the phone -- 'Please, just call her and tell her how sorry I am. Call her and tell her what I'm working on.' He's working on 'It Ain't Over, 'til It's Over.' To this day, when I hear 'It Ain't Over, 'til It's Over,' I just get touched in a deep place, because that boy was pouring out his heart. He was bound and determined to get his woman back." (See the 'It Ain't Over 'til It's Over" video here.)
It didn't work, but two decades later, things are all good.
"We were very young," Kravitz said about his marriage to Bonet. (He was 23 and she was 20 when they eloped in 1987. A year later, Bonet gave birth to their daughter, Zoe.) "And it was wonderful," he added. "And we had Zoe, which I see now is what it was all about. It was really about bringing this beautiful child to the planet. And also sharing the love that we had. Zoe's mom and I now are best friends, which is interesting because that's the way it started. But it makes you feel really good when you can do that."
Despite the fact that his BFF has now been in a long-term relationship with "Game of Thrones" star Jason Momoa, Kravitz said, "When we're all together now -- her man, her kids, Zoe, me -- we're all together and we're one big, happy family. It's beautiful, and it just shows you what can be done."
"Oprah's Master Class" airs on Sundays at 10 PM on OWN.
