With the season finale of "Glee" firmly in pocket, fans of the show are left to contemplate the future of Finn and Rachel as the current "Glee" cast enters what could be their last season. Since the launch of the show, it was evident to many that Finn and Rachel were the ultimate New Directions power couple, and had a traditional mismatch of personality types. The past two years have featured ups and downs, while the third is already looking like it could feature a bit more heartbreak.

    The First Year

When the glee club first became serious under the direction of Mr. Schue, Rachel was the Type A glee girl and Finn was a star football player blackmailed into joining the group. They had chemistry from the start. Part of this derived from Rachel wanting more for Finn than he wanted for himself, and part of it was pure magic. Throughout much of this season, Finn was tied to a pregnant Quinn. When Rachel exposed the unborn child as categorically not Finn's, Finn hesitated a moment too long and Rachel moved on, albeit briefly, to Jesse St. James. When this entire fiasco was cleared up, Rachel and Finn became boyfriend and girlfriend at Regionals.

    The Second Year

The second season of "Glee" launched with Rachel and Finn as a solid couple. They had a lot of stellar funny moments at the beginning of the season as they sung duets and sought to establish new student Sam and head cheerleader Quinn as a couple. However, the relationship went toxic as plot developments in Season 1 came back to haunt Finn. The rest of Season 2 relied on a series of Rachel Berry solos and emotional close-ups directed at Finn.

Potential Plotlines in the Third Year

Rachel and Finn reunited at Nationals in the season two finale of "Glee" despite Rachel's initial reticence to reenter a relationship that could interfere with her future Broadway career. Both her and Finn acknowledged that there was a year of their lives in-between the present and the time when such decisions must be made. This leaves one to wonder whether Finn and Rachel will leave McKinley together. On one hand, there is Rachel's dream career; on the other, the acknowledgment that at least one member of New Directions must become the Will Schuester of their generation - the teacher who molds the next generation show choir despite having the potential for a show business career. Both Rachel and Finn would be ideal choices for this role.

At this point, it is hard to say whether Rachel and Finn will end up as a permanent couple, but it will be fun to watch their journey.
