Paula Deen Has Type 2 Diabetes, Still Eats Fried Foods "in Moderation"

Paula Deen Has Type 2 Diabetes, Still Eats Fried Foods "in Moderation"

Paula Deen built her empire on a love of fried food, but the 64-year-old Food Network star made a shocking announcement Tuesday: she's suffering from Type 2 Diabetes.

"I was diagnosed three years ago during a regular physical exam with my doctor," Deen revealed on The Today Show. "I'm here today to let the world know that it is not a death sentence."

    PHOTOS: Naughty star appetites

Deen chose to keep her condition private because she "had to figure things out in my own head...I had nothing to give with my fellow friends out there."

Now a paid spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, Deen is gearing up for the launch of Diabetes in a New Light, which offers "simple ways" to manage the disease.

"People are not going to quit eating. We quit eating, we're all out of here. I wanted to bring something to the table when I came forward, and I've always been one to think that I bring hope, because I've had lots of obstacles in my life, y'all."

When Al Roker repeatedly asked Deen if her diagnosis was a direct result of her butter-rich diet, she admitted that it's "part of the puzzle" but not the only factor.

Citing genetics, lifestyle, diet, stress and age, Deen said that like many baby boomers, "there's a good chance that [Type 2 Diabetes] will be one of the issues you have to face."

"Here's the thing: I have always encouraged moderation. On my show I share with you all these yummy fattening recipes, but I tell people, 'In moderation. In moderation,'" Deen explained. "I've always eaten in moderation," she said, adding that the recipes seen on her show account for only 30 meals a year.

"It's like I told Oprah [Winfrey] a few years ago: 'Honey, I'm your cook, not your doctor,'" Deen said. "You are going to have to be responsible for yourself."

I got news for you. Butter is a healthier choice than most of the margarine's out there that are only one molecule away from being plastic.

right, butter does not cause diabetes, processed food, corn, white flour, sugars do. Butter, eggs and yes a little bacon is good for you, fake butters and fake anything are the poisons but, eating healthy is expensive like yams, steamed green veggies and fresh fruit, the list continues and please do not eat meat that is not from grass, pasture fed animals, you see what I mean? Pricey. sure I can go on about vegan food but enough already.

Some exercise regularly would help her a great deal. On that biggest looser show, those people lose that weight and alot of them reverse thier diabetes.

She is mistaken. Diabetes is a death sentence if you do not EDUCATE yourself on the disease.

As a country girl, I love, love, love Paula and her down home cooking. You just have to control the amounts you eat. Her son, Bobby has a new show called "not my mamas meals" which is a lighter version of her dishes.

Butter has nothing to do with it!! Just another ignorant statement by ignorant people who know squat about real nutrition. Good fat does not make you fat. High quality butter is a good fat. Its sugar people- SUGAR. And its pervasive. Its sweets, starchy carbs, even too much fruit. And definitely her fat butt, MAC and cheese and fried taters. Heart disease and diabetes are caused by too many refined carbs and the SUGAR your body makes from them- not from Butter!! Most so called "nutrition experts" are morons. Sugar causes inflammation and insulin tidal waves in your body that create insulin resistance and wreck your arterial walls. This addiction to refined carbs and SUGAR are why America is now a nation of fat slugs. Theres money to be made by big pharm and big med- so do you think they want you to really get a clue about good DEEP Nutrition? Heck no- that SUGAR is their golden ticket baby!!

There may be a stick of butter in a whole recipe which serves 6-8 people. So you really aren't eating that much if you just have a serving. Portion control is the key .

Why is all the good tasting food so bad for you? Why can't bacon, twinkies, and deep fried anything be good for you? (sigh)

I am a diabetic of over 20 years and everyone needs to understand moderation for sure. However, butter and fats DO NOT raise blood sugars as they have no carbs! Carbs and stress are the only things that do! IF you combine fat and carbs then the carbs burn up slower (think pizza and many pasta recipes). IF you eat fat and no carbs, no blood sugar rise will occur. Paula's cooking is no worse than those that eat those high fiber breakfast cereals, look at the packages some are up to 60 carbs per half cup-this is an entire days carb suggestion for any diabetic! No don't blame Paula, control your own diet!

i'm sure this announced doesn't have anything do with her she landed a multimillion-dollar deal to be the spokeswoman for a pharmaceutical company to endorse a drug she's taking?

My mate tell me, she was on Dr. Oz last month, and she never mentioned diabetes. Instead she just owned up to smoking cigarettes for 50 years.
you yanks can look forward to People or Us magazine running the cover story, "I'm back" usual rehab story private hell. Clearly this has been coming for a while.
She's been looking for ways to position herself.
Is she really going to be selling the cure now? Or will she back off for a decent interval?

either way, I take no pleasure in it. There isn't anything funny about Diabetes.

Maybe that's why her son has started a "Healthy" food program. She's a great cook but times they are changing. Sugar sugar sugar..that's why we have "fat" 10 year old's. I work in a school and you should see the junk these kids eat. It's terrible. 56% of my school is overweight. And yes they have overweight parents.Who could really care less. And then again you have a new age of women who don't know how to cook !! So they eat out or eat crap for dinner. Things have to change and it starts at home. Throw out the Xbox and get your kids outside !!!! ugh!!!!!!!!

I was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2008...I was put on Metaformine and I absolutely hated the side effect anyone whos been put on a 1000mg a day dosage knows what Im talking about ..so I started researching how to combat high blood sugar...LETS BE CLEAR! You can almost Cure Diabetes with the right DIET and excercise ..incorporating alot of BLACKBERRIES and CINNAMON with low fat food almost abolishes Hyperglycema ..it has been almost 4yrs and I have not touched any medication ..by staying away from all fried foods and saturated fatty foods use Blackberries and Cinnamon before eating non fried foods and work out at least 3 times a week and I assure you it works like MAGIC..your blood sugar drops to almost normal or acceptable levels ...Diabetes is a disease of will power ,determination and self control if you eat healthyly and excersise Diabetes GONE!

The problem is not just table sugar or butter it is because almost everything you eat turns to sugar in your system. ( carbs starch even fruits and vegies etc ) and it dose not matter if your fat or skinny the answer is everything in moderation
