Warning: spoilers follow!
The "Person of Interest" episode "Bad Code" proves Root (Amy Acker) correct in one respect: She's not the only person with "bad code." In fact, one of the government people involved too closely with the Machine also has some bad code, and the person responsible for making Root a horrible sociopathic woman also has very bad code. Reese (Jim Caviezel) is the only one who is able to follow the trail of all these people with bad code, proving that his "code" was very "well written," and he's not nearly as stupid as Root had assumed (in fact, he's not at all stupid).
Root threatens Denton and Finch
In the previous episode, Root had kidnapped Denton Weeks (Cotter Smith), one of the government officials to whom Finch (Michael Emerson) had sold the Machine for $1. She is brutal with Denton, continuously bringing up the fact that she hopes Finch will be the one to walk out alive after she obtains the information she needs to know about the Machine. She clearly hates Denton, often referring to his "bad code."
When she leaves the two men alone, Finch helps Denton to escape. Denton is very realistic in pretending to be willing to sacrifice himself to protect the Machine, but he immediately turns on Finch. Finch tells Denton that the Machine cannot be accessed remotely but can be accessed directly. Denton then proceeds to raise a gun he found in the room to Finch's head and pull the trigger. For the sake of the series, the gun is empty.
Root gives Finch an "I told you so" glance, then kills Denton after he tells her the approximate location of the Machine, in Salt Lake City.
The man and woman who created Root
Trent (Kevin Loreque), the husband of a librarian (Margo Martindale) kidnapped a girl (Hanna) from in front of the library. Hanna was friends with another girl (Sam) with whom she used to hang out in the library, playing games on the computer. Reese had assumed that Hanna had escaped from the evil man's clutches to become Root. Instead, it was Sam, who had told the librarian what had happened to her friend. Instead of trying to save Hanna, the librarian accused Sam of lying about her husband's involvement.
All that bad human code culminated in the murder of Hanna, who had never been found until Reese uncovered the whole story, with Carter's (Taraji P. Henson) help. Hanna had been buried under concrete in the Russells' own yard. Once again, a seemingly kind and friendly person turns out to have bad code that is almost as bad as her late husband's since she could have saved Hanna and prevented Sam's soul from being transformed into the evil psychotic-sociopath Root.
Reese follows the breadcrumbs
Reese tracks Sam's movements over time, from bank account to bank account. Fusco (Kevin Chapman) helps from the New York police station by listening in on government officials who have been looking for Denton. Reese finally knows where to go to find Root and Finch! When he gets there, however, he's too late. Root was one step ahead, knowing that Reese was on to her.
When Reese reaches the home and finds Denton dead, his face immediately droops, not knowing what to do next … until he finds a clue typed in code on a phone! He translates the puzzle to "train station" and takes off immediately to find his friend. Unfortunately, Root escapes, but it does not matter much once Reese rescues Finch! It will be interesting to see how they will work together now that Reese knows how to do the job all on his own. Will either of them be taking on new responsibilities?
